Greetings Middle East Teachers,

You will have to excuse my lack of abbreviations. I am not familiar with all the UAE's and PPP's. My husband and I taught ESL in Korea and Japan for 7 years. We are considering broadening our horizons in the Middle East. He has an MA in science education, while I only have a couple of undergraduate degrees (one from a nursing program). What are our prospects? Should we interview with teach away in NYC? In Korea and Japan we found jobs after we arrived. This probably isn't a good idea in the Middle East.

Serious replys only please.

Whatever you do, don't be bothered to read any earlier threads about whatever country you're interested teaching in. You should just post whatever brain fart pops into your head- I'm very serious about this Smile

Thank you for your reply.

I have and will continue to read all the threads. As for the gas that exudes from my brain. I have no excuse.

Did you post this on the wrong branch? You directed it to "Middle East teachers" but put it on the Saudi Arabia branch. This might fit better in the General Middle East section.

You are correct that you can not just pop into the Gulf and find a job. That could be possible in North Africa and the Levant. If you merely want to broaden your horizons and experience the culture, that part of the world is an option. But the pay is rather low...

If you are considering the ME for the money, the pay in the Gulf is much higher, but the employers are very sticky about credentials... and that they match what you are teaching. In other words, a science degree would teach science, not ESL/EFL. An absolute minimum for EFL is a BA + CELTA/TEFL Cert.

There will not be many options for you in the Gulf. Talk to TeachAway and see what they think. I worry about your credentials being accepted by the Ministry of Education in the UAE.
