The Gulf news yesterday and today are reporting increasing pollution in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. If all the water is desalinated does this mean the water we drink from bottles is potentially harmful? The raw sewage that was reported in Dubai - has this been solved. Does this problem exist in RAK, Fujera or Ruwais? |

Yes, pollution increasing all over the UAE. The Gulf News also had something about over in RAK they are going to coal power in the future. Wow - a nation with one of the highest rates of asthma and breathing related dissorders switching to coal in the near future?
Water gone, gas out in a couple areas, and back to the past - bring out the black rocks and fill the sky. Pollution not just in the water. |

I have been out here in the Western Zone for about a year. There has always been algae bloom around Mirfa(about 100k from Ruwais) I'ts the green variety not this new variety that the UAE is starting to have problems with. What it does mean is that the sea off Mirfa is getting too many nutrients from somewhere. I worry that sewage might be being pumped into the sea but really have no idea of why a township of 15000 could have such a large effect on the sea. I just don't swim there. The National has a good article on the whole thing. |

I've heard that some bottled water (I believe masafi and al ain) isn't desalinated. I try to stick with those. |

All bottled water is desalinated. Some companies use a tiny bit of groundwater in the mix so they can call it 'spring water' or something similar.
The algal blooms are a naturally occuring phenomena but they have been exacerbated recently by an increase in nutrients in the water - most likely from oil being discharged from tankers or from sewerage.
Where on earth are RAK supposed to be getting this coal from?!? |

According to Masafi's website, their water is not desalinated because it comes from the RAK mountain aquafers. However, you might want to take that with a "grain of salt" (sorry couldn't resist) |

Some of it is, but not all. There are aquifers in the mountains but the water table is getting lower and lower whilst the groundwater becomes more and more saline. It's not good..... |

I was at Jumeira Beach this past week. There was a red bloom in the water. The lifeguards wouldn't allow any swimming in the area. The phenomenon is probably seasonal but as a poster said it is doubtless exacerbated by pollution. |
