I'll have a new CELTA and a B.S. (from '02) in June with no teaching experience. I have narrowed down the geographic areas that I would like to live in while working in Indonesia. Has anyone here worked at the schools on my list? I'm looking for first hand and/or reliable information regarding the working conditions, pay rate for newbies, or reliability of these schools to honor the details of their employment contracts. Please PM me if you don't like to post negative feedback. Terima kasih banyak!!

Hello, with a CELTA and BA you should forget about EF as no matter how good one of their franchises may be, the pay is rubbish and they'll make you work crap hours (saturdays.) Apart from EF Bali if you are really depserate to go there; two friends of mine worked there and although the work was boring (lots of one to one conversation on skype) they didn't have any other problems, apart from rubbish pay.
If you are in Jakarta then TBI Jakarta and TBI Kelapa Gading are good schools to work for. I had a great year working in TBI Kelapa Gading and I know a teacher that's still there since two years ago. The DOS is great and has been there since it opened three years ago and the owner is a really nice guy who will always look out for everyone. Also the work is Monday - Thursday with everything else as optional overtime as they could never get the numbers for full classes on Fri and Sat. Good pay and insurance. No housing but enough money to rent a nice apartment and I can put you in touch with someone who could sort that out for you. Kelapa Gading is a brilliant area to live in too (apart from the floods, just make sure you are in an apartment ) PM me for contact details of the DOS at TBI if you like.
Good luck. |

Agree with you fishy on Kelapa Gading. There is enough to do there (shopping, bars etc) without ever having to leave the area. Also it is very middle class with a lot of Chinese and Koreans so 'hello mister' fatigue is not common at all. Also there seems to be more schools than anywhere else i've been so if one doesn't work out you may just go down the road and apply elsewhere. WSI opened another branch last year in the huge mall so there's another option. Great bunch working there. |

Define "reputable" in this context. Isn't that a bit of a subjective term? |

I'm not trying to be rude but I think I was fairly clear in my original post.

Thank you for all of the replies! |

Hey Fishy!!!
I would like the info. for the DOS at TBI but I'm not allowed to PM you. I haven't made enough posts for the system to allow me to initiate PMs. If you see this please PM me with the info. Thanks! |

Yes, your original post was clear. I was focusing more on your chosen thread title. My point, of course, is that terms like "reputable" and "reliable" are, more or less, subjective. I just want you to be prepared for that in case you end up taking advice and it doesn't work out. |
