Now that I have your attention...

Many of my students like golf. The Japanese golf term for second-to-last-place is "booby," apparently. I was wondering if English golfers also use this term.

Yeah, I know I could google it, but I tried, and didn't see an answer, nor do I have time to wade thru pages and pages of websites.

I know exactly jack about golf. Any help?

I think it probably comes from booby prize. In golf this is often given to the person who comes second last because, I think, if there is an actual prize being given for last place it might encourage people to make sure they are last. Something like that anyway. I know that my brother once got the booby prize in a golf tournament for being second last.

As a side note, it's called a Bogey if you get one shot over par on a hole in golf.

This might clear a few things up. The 'booby' prize in generalized western terms is for last place. Apparently it's different in Asia...or at least portions of Asia.

It sounds to me that it's more of a second tier "first prize" in a way, if that makes any sense.
