Hi,

I want to take the CELTA course and am applying to a few places that am intersted in. At the end of it all I would like to end up in Ecuador. I've been to Ecuador before and loved it. So I have a few questions about the work over there.

1. How easy is it to get a job before hand if am not in the country? (Iam looking at Otavalo area or Ibarra.)

2. I would like to teach children, are there jobs for that?

3. When does the school year start over there? ( I thought it was Sept/June)

4. Am also looking into getting a NYC cerf. for K-12, would that help with finding elementry school jobs?

5. What is the pay for working in such schools?

Thanks for your help. Also if anyone has any coments on the CELTA centers in Ecuador, Colombia, or New York that would also be apprciated.

Hello BocaNY

There is one CELTA center in Ecuador, Southern Cross. I am the trainer there. I can answer your questions. My name is Jem.

There are many jobs available for teaching young learners. Southern Cross is affiliated with an international school. You can get specific information about others and about the dates for the school year by writing to John Warren, the rector, whose email is on the website. There are many off-academic year programs for English language as well.

I would recommend the CELTYL extension for teaching young learners if you plan to get the CELTA. John Warren can give you more specific information about the certification you mention since he is an employer.

The pay for CELTA qualified teachers is at least $1000 a month net, but there is a range. The cost of living in Ecuador is very low, so your disposable income is relatively high on such a salary.

Send me a private message if you have questions about other centers. I can tell you that Southern Cross is a world class teacher training centre and one of the largest CELTA centers in Latin America.

Best regards

The next course starts 27 July in Quito. There is another starting 7 September in Guayaquil. Southern Cross does not currently offer the YL extension but is planning to start running it in 2010.

As far as I know there are no Latin America centres currently offering YLx or CELTYL. The British Council in Bogota does not offer either. You can go to the Cambridge ESOL site to search for YLx and CELTYL courses. In fact, you don't need these to work with young learners as you will get on the job training and you already have a qualification and probably significant experience, but of course they contribute to your employability in some markets.

Good luck!

Dear sir,
Although my name implies intentions of moving to Mexico I am open to a northern South American country like Ecuador, Peru, Columbia or Brazil.
I have looked into the SIT TESOL and aware of its prestige and recognition in the field.

My question is about the course dates and timing for employment.
I see you have a class starting late in July, if I took that course would I still have ample time to procure a job at a high school or uni for the 2009-2010 school year in Ecuador or a surrounding country or would I have to settle for a language school job until the next school year?

I have current English teaching certification in the states at the high school level and an accredited Bachelor of Arts degree from a university in the US.

HI there-

If you take a course starting late July, you'll finish late August- this may be early enough to find highshool or university work if that's what you're into.

Universities, which run on cycles, and language institutes, which hire continually, are the easiest hiring options- highschools, or elementary schools for that matter, are a little harder, given that they try like heck to hire before the beginning of the school year, for the WHOLE school year. The school year in Quito starts (usually) the first week of September- so you'd finish the course in time, but have little time to hunt.

Best,
Justin

PS- I wonder if we're in touch- I run the SIT TESOL center in Quito...

For Mexicobound, yes, you can find employment in schools if you take the July CELTA course. In fact, you can find work in schools even taking the second course in Guayaquil because there is significant turn over in the schools and there are openings year-round. Southern Cross has recruited employers who preferentially hire graduates from the CELTA course. Also, Southern Cross Teacher Training is an affiliate of Southern Cross High School, an international school in Guayaquil. We have a placement service that thus far has a 100% record. You can inquire about work and apply for the CELTA course at the Southern Cross website. Feel free to ask me any questions. Good luck!

The CELTA course in Ecuador is very inexpensive by global standards. It is $1300, or 980, or 875. The global average cost for the CELTA course is more than double this amount. Also the cost of living in Ecuador, though rising, is low by global standards.

Greetings, Jaem!

As a Job Developer in the USA, I have a particular interest in the job placement stats for Southern Cross' CELTA graduates. I understand that there is, of course, no commitment by CELTA providers to find employment. Nonetheless, can you describe the outcomes you are knowledgeable about. In particular, have any of your grads actually found work in the area? Thank you.

Hello charlesh1609

Although Southern Cross does not guarantee placement, we are the only center in North or South America to offer active job placement assistance for our teachers. We have, thus far, a 100% success rate in placing newly certified teachers. The job market for certified teachers is very good at the moment in Ecuador. Pay rates vary, of course, depending on location and work context, but the average pay for newly qualified teachers in urban areas is in the $1000 a month range, which makes for a good standard of living. The maximum salary offered by employers with whom we currently work is $1800 a month.

Sounds like you guys at Southern Cross are working hard to capture the Latin American CELTA market. Good for you! I think it's great that you're putting more of an emphasis on job finding support. That's good for everybody.

I wish I was making $1800/month in Ecuador...

Hi marg252

A degree isn't a requirement but it makes a big difference in employability and the types of employment you can get. With a Master's degree and the CELTA, there are no limitations and one of our CELTA grads is working in a high position with the Ministry of Education's division for language and cross-cultural studies. I know of one person from our course who didn't have a university degree who is working in a private language academy in Manta.

Hi Jaem

I'd love to go back to Ecuador - I was there for four years but have now been in Asia for about 9 years. I started as an English teacher (CELTA, DELTA qualified) then became a teacher trainer (for CELTA courses) but more recently have got into corporate training (am doing my MSc now in HR development) but still with an emphasis on communication and intercultural skills.

I'm planning a move back there towards the end of next year, but need to start looking for jobs!

You seem to know of potential employers and would be grateful if you could pass on any contacts.

Best wishes Smile
