I'm not in favor of employers saying that you will make double or triple the local salary. Sure, that's true, but they speak the languague, often live with family, so don't pay food or rent, know cheap places to shop and have fun. So while you might be making much more than the locals, your cost of living will also be much more

THANKS NG!!! Very Happy

That's very true Shocked

The locals always know the cheapest places to eat, how much to pay (or not pay) for just about anything, and they have a built in economic/social network (friends/family).

Life here in Mexico can be very hard at times. Even as an English teacher (or in spite of being one!) working full time it's difficult to save any moeny at all. The cost of living is always on the rise. When I first came here, I only planned on staying in Mexico for 6 months. Now I've been here over 4 years.

A nativer speaker can get a job in Mexico with no qualifications whatsoever, not even a degree let alone a TEFL cert. I think it's better to have a TEFL and a BA but for the language school, business, and private classes that make up the bulk of the market for TEFL teachers in Mexico those things are icing on the cake. The only jobs that might want to see a degree and a TEFL are in a middle/high school or a university and even then not all of those schools care.

To the OP: Take a 120 hour TEFL if you can. If not, just grab an on-line course. Most of the HR people and school directors don't even know about things like this website. I have been interviewed by people that could barely speak English and I have been hired to teach in a upper class high school in just one 20 minute interview. Why? My resume looks good, I dress nice and I play the part.

I agree with others here that 1) you should get proper certification, and 2) do not waste your time and energy on any certification that is done online! A total waste of time and money, trust us!

Consider: Why would you want to teach without proper training? It is sooo stressful for you and probably not very rewarding for your learners.

However, you might want to take up the offer for help in placement in Peru and hope for on-the-job training that will help you. Teaching English is not something you can just do because you are a native speaker!

In Ecuador, you will be virually guaranteed good work, with a contract, making about $1000+ a month, but only if you are certified either by CELTA through Cambridge University or perhaps, though I don't know this ( ask Justin ) myself, by TESOL through SIT or Trinity College. Check out Southern Cross or one of the TESOL training sites for information on certification. Without certification, you are not entitled to a visa, you are not protected in the job market, and you are not going to earn nearly as much money.

Also, why haven't you gotten your certificate? There are ways to do it online, or in one weekend. I know that certain circumstances make it harder to just get a certificate, but I think that if you can, you should try.

Those types of certs aren-t worth the paper they-re written on.

Obviously, but they're better than having nothing.

Yeah, and I'd let an internet qualified surgeon cut me open!!!!

We native speakers prefer to be properly trained.
