The information on this institution is largely outdated. Can anyone supply more recent information - pay, working conditions, location etc. Thanks.

Location: Jubail Industrial City is a nice modern (but small) city on the Arabian Gulf. It has several pleasant beach-side parks, allegedly for families only, but I have never seen single people being chased out. There are sufficient shopping facilities for your food and clothing needs, and it is a short drive to Old Jubail for stuff you can't find here. Housing is mostly good, but extremely expensive (SR40,000+ for a 3-bedroom villa) If you don't get given a place, your housing allowance will be stretched to the limit. The weather is pleasant (for much of the year) and like a humid oven for the summer. The streets are wide and you can drive as fast as you like. The alleged air pollution is nothing like what some posters may have you believe, I have never been bothered by asthma or anything of that nature in the two years I have enjoyed living here. You can see lots of smoke and flames rising from the chimneys in the industrial zone, but it mostly blows away over Old Jubail, not the residential areas in the Industrial City.
Pay: Depends on your experience, qualifications, etc. I'm happy with mine.
Working conditions: I don't work at the University College, so I can't say.

Dont presume that the air in Jubail is fine.

MixtecaMike dismisses this alleged air pollution off hand but my son developed asthma. I saw lots of sick kids fighting for breath at the various hospitals and clinics we visited.

At least two Royal Commission doctors told me that the pollution in Jubail is as bad as some parts of industrial China; they also told me that the RC falsifies the air quality readings from the Industrial City..

True the wind blows the foul air south to Old Jubail, unfortunately thats were I was living. The area is mainly home to Asian labourers but the RC isnt bothered about their health..and neither does Mucus Mike seem to be.

Its a pity because I liked working in Jubail and by Saudi standards JIC, JUC and JTI are pretty good places to work.

I never had any problem with the air quality, and lived both in the residential zone and old Jubail. I have met the German guy who does the air quality measurements; he never made any mention the Royal Commission was faslifying the figures.

There are plenty of reasons for asthma, which is increasing wildly in most of the developed world. Anti-biotics and cleaning fluids are one contributory factor. Then there are mites in carpets, and one shouldn't discount allergies triggered by the large amount of vegetation in the residential area.

Incidentally, single women going for an interview with UCJ should enquire about the housing.

You don't have to presume, just take my word for it. Smile

Sorry for your son's asthma, but I have not been been troubled by asthma here, and neither has my son been troubled by chest problems, which we have experienced elsewhere.

If you chose to live in Old Jubail for economic reasons, (which would be the only possible reason I can imagine) then your family health was the price you chose to pay. I have to spend more than my housing allowance to live in a nice villa, 3 minutes walk from the waterfront, with the accompanying fresh air, however this is a price I consider worth paying.
Until you mentioned it, I can't say I was particularly concerned for the health of the Asian laborers in Old Jubail, sorry. Are you particularly concerned for the people living in industrial China?

How dare you, presume that I would put economics before my childs health!

If I had known what I was letting my children in for I would never have moved to the old town. Be happy your son is healthy, mine was until he came to Jubail.

The main reason I decided to stay in Old Jubail was not economic, in fact I could have found cheaper and better housing in New Jubail. I could have taken one of the RCs apartments.

I ended up staying in a glorified portacabin and dipping into my pocket to the tune of 15,000SAR on top of my accommodation allowance.

BUT I didnt want my wife cooped up 24/7, unable to go out other than a quick trip to Panda, my kids unable to play in the street (when it's not too hot), my car to be stoned (this happened) by bored kids hanging on street corners and so on. We decided to stay on a compound, basic as it was, where at least there was a shop and some women for my wife to talk to.

Some wives are quite happy to stay at home, more power to them.my wife needed a wee bit more social stimulus.

I just had an interview with them. It seemed like a quiz about my CV. ASking dates, times etc. Try to trick me with saying Prague when I had never taught in Prague. Saying that I was not prepared for teaching and that my TEFL course was not good enough.

The majority of the quesiotns were simply about my CV, which they had right in front of them.

UCJ is doing this as a number of people are applying and being accepted with fake degrees at some tertiary institutions in Saudi. Unfortunately, these people are expert liars. Only a thorough check of the certificates will tell whether they are saying the truth.

Something that threw me was that when I asked for emails of current or former teachers, they said that no one had ever asked them that before.

Isn't this standard procedure? I've asked all the other places I've interviewed with for emails. And they've willingly given them to me.

If you are a nature girl, then I advise you to avoid UCJ, they are using double standards in their recruitment!

I do like nature, don't really get it in Lima. I'm also boring, I'm fine with curling up with a good book on Friday night or watching a movie, which is why I was considering KSA.

What you mean by UCJ's using double standards in their recruitment?

Double standards quite possibly means differing pay scales/benefits
for men/women with the same qualification/experience.
Is it good or bad? Depends on whether your a guy or a gal.
