Hello!!

Has anyone out there every taught at UCSI in Kuala Lumpur? I've been hired for the summer session, and am wondering if anyone has any information about teaching there, and also what it's like to stay in Kuala Lumpur from June--August. Is it very hot--air pollution??

I've asked the contact person where the apartment is located (they give free shared with other teachers housing), but she never answers that question. Just tells me how long it takes walking or by car to get there.

Many thanks for your help.

I have been in Malaysia less than a year, and only know the uni I am in now, so I can't help you out much, I'm afraid. However, I can tell you that the weather is warm and humid all the time; it takes many months to acclimatize. The housing situation at my uni is not too good, but I don't know about yours.

Can you tell me what the initials of your uni stand for? Maybe I have heard of it. Also, how did you get the job? I am looking to stay in Malaysia, but at another institution.

Good luck.

UCSI = University College Sedaya International.

I only know of this school's reputation, and I met the CEO once (Peter Ng, very nice guy).

Sedaya seems to be well-run but, again, I do not have specific info that can answer your questions. If they provide housing for lecturers than I am sure that they are within the same township as their main campus, which is in Cheras.

Thanks EM and Jati for your replies. EMaster, I'd still like to know about the air quality in KL in summer. And, I found this job on the internet--on Dave's ESLcafe, I believe. Do either of you know about this area called Cheras? Is it in the middlse or the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur?

Cheras is south of Kuala Lumpur. There is really no break between KL and Cheras, of course, like most large cities the suburbs are contiguous with the city core. Cheras has a wide variety of housing available, and cheaper land which is why Sedaya built there. Mass transit does extend down to Cheras from the KL city centre so it is fairly easy to get around.

I have a map book of KL and its 'burbs, but don't know if something similar is online. Maybe I can get a snapshot from Google earth for you.

Location map for University College Sedaya International:

Once you arrive in KL, pick up a Map book from any bookstore or newspaper vendor in the area. Well worth the RM30-40 it costs these days.

Very easy to get around KL environs by the Light Rail Transit (LRT), Monorail, KL Expres (from the airport), and KTM (commuter train).

By STAR LRT : Nearest station: Bandar Tasik Selatan. UCSI University Shuttle Service available from Bandar Tasik Selatan station to UCSI University South Wing and UCSI University North Wing

HI Jati,

Thank you for sending the info. Do you attend that university? Can you tell me, Jati, are there any beautiful green places to go near that area? And also, can you tell me, is the air very polluted? I need to know the answer to last question as I get health problems if the air is really polluted. Terima kasih!!

Cheras is on the south side of the KL metroplex. There are some "green lungs" to the east where the mountains begin. Air pollution in KL is not too bad, compared to Jakarta or Bangkok, but it can be bad when there is massive forest burning in Sumatra (Indonesia). It rains many evenings in the KL area so the air does tend to clear at night.

I still want to pull up a google earth image for you to see. I will put it on my blog so that you can go and look. I don't live in KL but rather work at a college on the east coast of the peninsula (Kuantan).
