I'm an 18-year-old Singaporean... I hold a CELTA Pass A.

I had so much trouble getting a job in Vietnam. I even applied to Outerspace and took their silly test, but the manager thought I was too young so nope.

I stuck it out for 2 months--I was learning Vietnamese part time. But the school I was working at fired me, and I hadn't got even a single callback from the resumes I sent out via EMS and on foot.

Oh well, not too bad for a holiday Smile

With due respect, you are 18 years old. Many students will have difficulty respecting someone that age, even if you lie and say you are 25. It depends on how you look.

At eighteen, you don't have experience or the education. I'm not saying it makes a great teacher, but if you add the young age of 18, the schools and the students may have difficulty taken you seriously. No offense, but you are, a teenager.

There is a lot more competition now in HCMC as more teachers are here. This include NES "whites" as well as Asian non-NESsers.

You just didn't know the right places to apply to. But, YES, a teenager has an extremely limited market to appeal to. I suspect that in 2 months, you did a lot more sight-seeing than job-seeking. Fresh and New is always appealing to most ed. markets. You didn't take your CELTA to the front-lines! A Teacher is a Teacher regardless of age!

Don't sweat it, babe. Next time will be better!

I agree that 18 is not the optimum age and I certainly hope that my return after a university degree will be much better. However, I hold a CELTA Pass A which in my opinion, is much more important as a teaching qualification than any university degree in Physics or History.

If I were to consider my trip as a working thing, it was an abject failure. I tried, believe me, to get out there and hit the schools. The reason I came home was because I was wasting my time applying to schools which didn't want me (because of my age or non-native-speaker-status)

That's funny how you think a Celta compares to a 4 year degree. Go and try doing a science degree in a good university and see how you think about it after that. Celta is a piece of toilet paper compared to a degree from a good university. Science degrees are a lot tougher that arts degrees. I have both a science degree and and an arts degree so I know.

Whats Celta take 1 month?

Confused Having a degree doesn't mean u are qualified to teach, regardless of whether you attained if from Harvard or online?

you still need to to do at least 1 more yr to get QTS, or do a PGCE.

anyhow, a lot of uni students can't even spell and use punctuation correctly?!

i would rather hire a teacher with a CELTA ( with no degree or experience) than a teacher with just a degree ?
ok, if the degree holder had experience or a teaching certificate, thats different?

who's discussing arts vs sciences?

relax dude.
