Out of curiosity... Regarding Chilean residence permits/visas for US citizens.
I was told by someone recently applying for their temporary residence visa in the US consulate that the cost of getting a visa has raised dramatically.... The consulate asked $400 for the Temporary Residence and $500+ for Subject to Contract.
However, the Extranjeria fees website still lists the price as $0 (again, for people from the US) for both Visas. http://www.extranjeria.gov.cl/ingles/filesapp/FEE_CHART.pdf
Has anybody seen anything in the news, or any updated documents, etc.. that cover these changes?
Is there some unfair chance they would apply the fees to those applying through the Consulate offices in the US but not if you do it in Chile at Extranjeria?
Has anybody perhaps been able to disprove this or heard that it was a mistake?
I'm not looking for any advice, just information. |

A quick phone call to the relevant authorities should help you.
US Embassy 330 3000
Departamento de Extranjeria 600 626 4222
Took me 30 seconds to track those numbers down.

I suppose I could call. Assuming I call they will either tell me the same, or tell me something different... and I will just have one more source adding to the collection of conflicting information.
What I'm looking for is something in writing that discusses it more so than "an answer". I figured they might not be aware of the documents or news articles that track these changes given their own website doesn't reflect them.
If I call I'll post what I'm told regardless. thanks for the numbers |

EDIT: I'm editing my post as I finally found my answer, in writing.
It may be of interest to anybody considering getting the residence visa in the US before they leave for Chile, the cost did in fact spike for US citizens.
Temporary Visa - $400
Subject to Contract Visa $520
The changes apparently went into play on Jan 1 of this year. You can find the updated fees list by clicking on the top link "Visa List" here http://www.chile-usa.org/visasgral.htm
They're still charging $0 for US people here in Chile to apply, (verified Friday April 25). The link for those fees can be found at the extranjeria website or the link I posted in the original question.

I agree with your agreement!!!
I don't know why she tried to create an unnecessary panic without making a couple of simple enquiries first.
Attention seeker, perhaps. |

haha. yeah... i was trying to freak you guys out for attention, gotcha!
how silly of me to look to a relevant forum for information when everything i could find was misinformed. as you might have noticed, i wasn't looking for someone to answer the question as much as i for news sources discussing it.
also, rather than cause panic... the information might be useful to a number of people.
obviously there are plenty of people researching the visa issue who might try to arrange these things before arrival, and while you, in retrospect, might decide its more logical to apply for a visa in Chile, they might not have known unless someone presented these changes |
