Hi, friends:

I applied for an post of assistant professor at one university, and finally received the offer from them. The salary is mentioned and provided in the offer letter, but it is not as high as expected. I am wondering whether it is arugable? For example is it appropriate for me to email them asking for higher salary?

Anyone had similiar expereiences? or got success for higher payment after bargain?

Thank you!

Mr. H

Which university?
You should have discussed your salary during interview (if any!).

The salary scale for faculty members with government university follows a fixed scale, and is according to your subject area, qualifications, years of experience, passport type (eyes colour!), etc.

The one I got the offer from is KFUPM.
when you say the salary scale is fixed, you mean it not arguable?
My qualification won't change anyway (Phd, asian), so the salary for me won't change?

Thanks!

H

No. The salary is according to a scale of 15 levels. each elevel depends on your qualification, years of experience, subject area, etc.
It is possible to negociate your salary if you think you have strong reasons for higher salary. But if your PhD is from one of the Asian universities, and you are coming from an Asian county, then it will not help your case!
