I am now in year four of looking and wondering about which masters program to enroll in and complete.
It seems that I regularly find programs that interest me, but have not been able to convince myself to let a program convince me that the investment is worth it.
For a long time, I have been unsure as to exactly what I want to do, but life seems to be pushing me (still) in the direction of teaching languages. It has always been an area of interest for me, and I have been doing it for the last (almost) two years with other previous experience.
I had a crap GPA in uni and I know all the reasons why--most of them I have corrected. Still, I cant just apply to any old school and get in. Also, I have very little money to pay for school. I have been in Mexico for the last two years planning and going through with a wedding and then working on getting my wife into a PhD program and getting some cash flowing into our bank accounts.
I am most attracted to the Southern Mississippi MATL because it has an emphasis in TESOL, one in Spanish, and one in French, and while I enjoy ESL/EFL, I think I would enjoy teaching Spanish as well.
Anyone got any dirt on this school? Whats the dish? |

I actually know about this Uni because my Uni worked in coordination with their foreign exchange program.
One of my friends went with them to Puebla for a summer term. He really like the people he went with and said the profs from the uni were very cool.
More important, this Uni is accredited by SACS, SREB and NCATE (very nice)
I see you are not happy with your GPA, is it a 2.85 or better for your last two years?(I see that is a requirement)
Have you taken the GRE?(another requirement)
That damn test is hard, most likely the hardest CBT I have ever taken.
Best of luck to you. |

I am from Mississippi originally (did I just admit that? ) and went to a community college in the area. USM has a very good reputation in the area, as does the department you're referencing. There are also many Spanish-speaking individuals of Mexican descent in the area of the university that you can practice your Spanish with |

2.85 for the last two years? Nope.
GRE? Haven't yet but I am confident that I can score very high on the exam.
That said, letters of recommendation I do have. Two years experience as well.
The program I am looking at is the online program and I am a fluent (near native level) Spanish speaker.
Perhaps I'm not master's material on paper, but I'll claw and fight my way in somewhere respectable. What I'm trying to figure out is whether or not SoMiss is a respectable joint. |

Yes, SoMiss is a respected Uni.
That is why they ask for a 2.85 for the last 2 years and GRE scores from applicants.
I don't see too many other online programs asking for these requirements.
They are legit. |

Many accredited state universities are offering degree programs online. They are just as legitimate as the on-site versions of the same degree programs, though sometimes more intensive because some schools have you finishing the same course content in less time (e.g. over eight weeks instead of an entire semester). |
