|
|
I saw it somewhere that KFUPM provides free bus for academic staff to shop (from family housing to supermarket). Is that true? Anyone can confirm?
Or it is necessary for a family to buy a car there?
Any input appreciated. |

Free buses are provided by the uni and also by Farm 5 which is a local supermarket. |

In the evenings (twice a week ?) KFUPM lay on buses to downtown Khobar. Separate vehicles for men and women, in accord with local custom. No service to the Corniche that I know of. Nor to KFUPM Beach. Befriend someone with a car ? |

Is it one bus for men and one for women, or one for men and one for families? |

The Farm 5 Bus to the Supermarket was mixed. The buses to town laid on by KFUPM were gender-segregated.
Maybe Liberation has arrived since I left ? |

Taxis are cheap in Saudi. Find the going rate from a colleague and agree the price before getting in (and then stick to it) - to prevent hassles later. Most individuals find a specific driver they can rely on and then call him when they need a ride! (Dependable if you have your wife/kids with you.)
If not, rent a car! You should be able to rent a car from about SAR 1,500 per month - and you would be able to drive that to Bahrain too. |

Taxis are cheap but you would be surprised at the reluctance of many teachers to part with SR25 (approx. US$7) to head to downtown Khobar. I remember one who would hang about and approach people who might be driving and ask for a lift. This is someone picking up US$4000 a month with no outgoings and no dependants ! He was not alone. Lift-scroungers were ubiquitous. |

You don't have to look very far to find these miserly gits in KSA. I lost all respect for an (American) colleague of mine who refused to pay for a crate of 30 eggs when he came to the cashier and found the price had increased from 16 Riyals to 18 Riyals. |

Life is a lot easier in KSA if you loosen up and spend a bit of money. No pockets in a shroud. |
