Thankfully, it's a short article but there are comments from various readers below it. |
It's obviously satire, and you would think that the commenters (most of them English teachers) would comprehend that.
I am planning to take the CELTA this year. I am 100% preparing to work my butt off and be challenged. The article is reassuring if you read it correctly. |
I'm not convinced that it is satire and, apparently, neither were most of the respondents. |
It is pretty obvious to any speaker of British English that it most certainly is satire, and fairly good satire at that. In fact, I would go one further and say that the writer is clearly English, as evinced by his humour. |
British English is a foreign language for many of us in other Anglophone countries. What's that old saying about the US and Britain being separated by the same language? Don't presume to think that the only English in this world is that strange language you people speak over in the UK! |

Oh, he's British alright:
"Also, 1000 pounds for a teaching certificate?? Im not asking to become a bleeding doctor, am I?"
And it is truly amazing how many of the respondents didn't detect that it's satire. But at least one did:
"Seems like a lot of people reading this blog think that Johnathan Swift actually wanted to eat babies, too."
But then, a fair number of people took Swift seriously, too:
"Jonathan Swift is today known as perhaps the one of the greatest satirists of all time, due to his (initially) anonymous publication of A Modest Proposal, which proposed cannibalism (among other things) as a solution to overpopulation, poverty and famine in Ireland. It was, to his amusement, taken seriously."
I would imagine Mr. Case is equally amused.
I'd imagine |

Dear kymerhit,
I haven't done the CELTA, so I have no basis for comparison. Still, I find it difficult to imagine that it's in the same league as Parris Island - where I spent fourteen memorable weeks back in '63 and '64.
Have you ever seen "Full Metal Jacket." That came pretty close, but the D.I. in that film was really much too compassionate and caring.
By the way, I thought you were in the REVERSE Culture Shock Unit.
Regards,
John |

Honestly it's pretty obvious to speakers of American English as well that this is satire. And you don't have to have read A Modest Proposal to figure that out. |
