HI again-
My experience is that international schools value your non-TESOL specific education more. (Since only in rare cases will TESOL be what you'd teach in an international school.)

In my world, an MBA wouldn't do a lot. (I work in non-profit education, for pete's sake.)
But in yours, if you want business admin work, then get the MBA. I don't assume the TEFL cert will get you a lot in that area.
I don't fully understand what you mean by that. I'm a high school teacher - and want to continue teaching - and I know that a Masters degree will bump me up on the (American) pay scale and make me more qualified to teach my content area (which is Secondary Business). |
Sorry, and I guess I should have paid more attention. I hadn't heard of anyone doing an MBA except as an entrance towards business management positions. In any case, what I meant was that in the work atmosphere where I spend my time, latin American non-profits, this qualification would be irrelevant. (We've had a few teachers that had them, but it doesn't really relate.) What high schools in general, or international schools in particular, think of a teacher having an MBA is just outside of my experience.
Best,
Justin |

I AM a licensed teacher, but I will be doing additional work over the next year to improve my skills and employability.
In your opinion, where should I put my energy? |

Naturegirl has some good advice.
I would also take the time to look at schools associated with the Dept. of Def and the Dept. of State. The DoD works with American based schools and the Dept of State deals with Int. Schools.
The DoD does a big job fair every January in the US. |

Thank you all so much for your feedback!
I want to continue on my MBA since I already started it. I think I'll keep my efforts focused on Intl schools, job fairs and my grad work at this point.
I have a foreign exchange student from Brazil. Today, she gave me a Spanish 1 text book since I told her I was trying to brush up for teaching in LA. Teaching is so darn, rewarding I'm so excited about getting to LA! |
