I pay 9450 for a gym with a swimming pool and all the usual aerobics classes if I choose to participate. And its only a hundred metres from my house. That's a full time membership. They have weekday specials for about 6k I think.
My city has 380,000 people and at least ten gyms scattered around, maybe more. There is another place in the city centre without a pool that costs about 6000. |

I found the same problem when looking for a gym in Kawagoe (metro Tokyo). I prefer to work out in the morning, but all the gyms opened no earlier than 10am. |

Though checking out the public facilities is still worthwhile. I've been to some which do have extensive facilities, including free weights, though it's probably true that there are less of these places do, than there are places that do not. |

| Hi JL, hisashiburi! You are right- I have heard of city gyms which have excellent facilities, but I'd be surprised if Chichibu did. Definitely worth checking though. |

Yes, I'd actually be surprised, too. I also went to the facility's website which you mentioned. They had some photos of treadmills, but I didn't see any photos or reference to weight training facilities. Odds are against it. Though it's still worth it to the OP to confirm in person, just in case. |

| Well, considering that the original poster is getting a car for personal use and living in a cheaper area, 30,000 less than a Tokyo position doesn't seem all that bad. |

| I assume cornishmuppet is talking about a commercial gym, not the municipal gym. That price is standard for gyms in Tokyo at least- Tipness, Konami Sports etc. I pay the same, and my gym has a really well equipped machine gym, with lots of classes, swimming pool with a view, nice bath/shower area, gambanyoku etc. |

Yeah, its a proper private gym. I have no complaints, really. I'd like a rowing machine and an outdoor onsen, but you can't have everything!
There is actually a place in my city with a proper, full sized onsen attached where you get baths free with gym membership, but its a good twenty min drive.
Free? I've never heard of anything being free! Yeah, maybe I could do a few curls with the rusty dumbells at my school or strip off and do a few laps of the pool while the kids are in classes, but its not quite the same. I don't know of any pay-by-the-hour gyms near me, though there is an Olympic swimming pool a few minutes drive away (left over from the 1998 games in Nagano) which is 500yen a time. |

What events did they host in the pool?
Me - Gold's Gym: 10,500 yen membership - large gym lots of facilities and 24 hour. For women the same package is 8,400. |

| That's a big difference between the men's and women's prices. Are there certain facilities that women can't use, or is it just an incentive to get more women to join? |

| That is more than likely just an incentive to get more women to join as Gold's has a somewhat macho image. I can't imagine that their gyms have facilities that women can't use. |

Yes, an incentive for women. They seem to make better use of the facilities than us guys - most of the classes have a considerably higher ratio of women. |
