Adw, May I suggest that you take some time, think of all your questions, and then post them in a single thread?

Others have done this with mixed results.

As for this question, do yourself a favor and get a degree in a field with future employment prospects, such as business. It will help you whether you come to China or not.

Avoid humanities majors such as history, sociology, psychology, and so forth, unless you are planning and able to do graduate work. An LCSW is a good professional degree with a humanities background. By "good" I mean a degree which is actually useful in the job market.

Spending thousands of $ on a degree which you can only use as a English teacher in China is the kind of thing you wouldn't have done if you had studied business.

Hansen, even if I ask one question in one single thread you are too absorbed and/or detracted by your own thoughts that you don't take the time to answer my question... Rolling Eyes

My apologies, adw. As for the answer to your question, the answer to it depends on location, the type of school, whether or not you are willing to work illegally, what type of guanxi your school has, the mood and policies of the FAO of the province and school, whether you are willing to offer a bribe to someone who is willing to accept it, can find a middleman to offer the bribe, and so on.

I hope this will help you make the right decision. In your particular case, I would urge you to get a degree in a useful field, demonstrate some professional competency, and then offer your services to students in China. The "Z" visa is known as an "experts" visa, not a "losers" visa. What is the area of your expertise?

Hansen, thanks for your expert advice ! Smile
As for me, I don't have a real "area of expertise". but this might be coming sooner or later... Embarassed

If you are under the age of 21 and are looking to travel I suggest hitting up one of the chain schools. You age will play a role in how respected you are by your students.

I have a coworker who has absolutely no degree whatsoever. She told me that she was hired simply because she's a woman and the school wanted a woman. She made less per month than the rest of us (i. e. degree holders). She didn't even have a certificate, so it depends on a lot of factors. Some schools in locations very desperate for any foreign teachers; well, it is not unheard of for them to petition, pay off, or pull strings to get an actual native speaker for their school, regardless of the applicant's failure to have any of the minimum, national qualifications.
