Hi,
I want to do some film work while teaching English. Is there a main centre for film production? Tokyo, I suppose.... Are there any other centres? Out of curiosity, are there any production jobs available for foreigners? I'm just starting to learn Japanese, so language might be a bit of a problem for me. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Two questions:

1. what visa do you plan to come on?

If you are on an instructors visa you are not allowed to do any other kinds of jobs. You will likely need at least a spouse visa which allows you to do non-teaching jobs.

2. With no Japanese your chances of getting a job here is virtually nil.
What can you offer a film studio that a Japanese person can not do, and how do you expect to communicate with people when all production is done in Japanese?

I dont know about film production so much, but the the big film company in Japan is Shochikuza, which is like a Japanese Universal Studios- they make all the yakuza movies.

In Kyoto the samurai dramas are made at Eigamura.

Hi,

I noticed this a few days ago while looking through Tokyo Classifed:

Filmmarmalade is a casual network of filmmakers and wannabes and all in between. Info, projects and regular shortfilm parties.

http://classifieds.japantoday.com/

Their ad is in the 'Arts' section of the 'Join the Club' classifeds. Maybe they could point you in the right direction? Good luck.

We are about to begin work on a low-budget, mini DV production in Gunma prefecture. We could use all of the technical assistance we can get, but it's strictly voluntary.

We are also looking for actors if anyone is interested. We are casting for..
short, non-Japanese female
naive, Sporty, North American, male, age 25-35
various male, Japanese thugs
older, Japanese Godfather figure

The film is a full-length comedy and location is just an hour and a half outside of Tokyo, half hour by shinkansen. If you want to be a star, or would just like to help, please send an email to [email protected]

hi,
thanks for the info everyone.

As for visa type, I'm applying to AEON right now and am going to apply to another school soon so I'd most likely arrive with a work visa. If I don't get in with them I can get a work-holiday visa (I'm Canadian). I don't mind doing production jobs for the experience and was hoping to be able to do some small things in my spare time. I'm debating whether it would be better to come with a WHV and try to find a job after I arrive. This would give me better control over where I live. I might also be able to get a job with less than full time hours. Any advice on the WHV? I'm also planning to shoot a documentary while I'm in Japan too.

Two of my ex-co-workers at Nova were always going to auditions for modelling jobs they saw advertised in the Metropolis (they never got any work though). I'm not sure of the terms..I think 'open call' is the right phrase, meaning no agent was required. Although a few were dodgy and seem to be a disguise for porno, most appeared genuine. A couple of the auditions were for tv commercials so perhaps it might be worth your while just to go to these auditions and possibly make some contacts?? Just an idea cause I don't know how this industry works.
