VS - what does leery mean in Brit English? Does it mean wary?

I'm not VS, but yup - if one is "leery" of someone/thing, one is distrustful, skeptical:

"leery
"untrusting, suspicious," 1718, originally slang, probably from dialectal lere "learning, knowledge" (see lore), or from leer (v.) in some now-obscure sense."

Regards,
John

Just an additional note: to leer ( in British English) means to give someone a lecherous look. Isn't' language fascinating.
Just to be a real show-off, did you know that Influenza ( let's not mention swine on this post - oops Embarassed ) is from two Arabic words: Anf( nose) plus Anza (goat) - goat's runny nose - so nothing to do with the P. word!
Does my brilliance qualify for a job in Oman do you think? Laughing

Well,...Erm...it's not like they would advertise it! When I last lived in Taif in 2004 and Saudi was in the midst of trying to rid itself of what it once enabled, the "security" forces had raided suspected militant hideouts in Makkah. Some of them had gotten away and were in hot pursuit by the forces towards Taif. You don't run to places of peril...you run to safety and sanctuary. The hate towards us white-skinned folk was palpable in al-Haweiya.

Especially, if it is given by one know only as "Aqualung"! Very Happy If it were given by "Cross-eyed Mary" one would not know which she was leering at! Cool
Coincidently for you, lol, the first company that I worked for in Taif was "Lear"...

So glad I am so old I don't rise to your bait NCTBA. They ( AlQ) don;t advertise themselves on the billboards here either but I know they are around. Anyway, I shall be beautiful in black so they won't know I'm white. Ha. I am so funny I amaze myself. Seriously though, I am taking all you(pl) say on board.

OK wrong word NCTBA. "Slight tongue in cheek comment? Sarcasm? "
I love this forum. I don't know any of you but I feel I have some friends ( not to say I don't have any here). I hope you will all support me if I get arrested, refused an exit visa, slapped by the Muttawa ( I was in imprisoned by the Pasdah ( dress police in Iran) so I am a bit of an old hand (and everything else in the ME) etc. etc.
That is.... if I go!

That was uncalled for. This explanation was given to me by a leading Professor of Linguists in London. I don't condone rudeness Stephen... so at this point I shall disengage. For your information I studied languages, including Latin to degree level.
Goodbye all and thanks
