when, 24 hours before you're scheduled to go back for another 6 months, you find yourself curled up in a feutus position on your bed, staring at the wall, quivering nervously and babbling some incoherent wish to stay where you are.

Now, now, Basil...it isn't so bad.
There is a plethora of things for an expat in the Gulf to do.
You can develop a drinking problem, you can stare blankly into space, you can memorize the BBC and CNN news cycles, you can endure endless bouts of depression and self-recrimination, you can go shopping at Spinney's, you can...ahhh, did I mention you can develop a drinking problem?

Maybe the question should be
When is it time to leave Qatar?
It's too bad some employers make the decision for their employees.

That's a good question. Hard to answer for some of us who are used to the place, like the students and are just about managing on our low salaries. I am lucky I have no alimony to pay out.

Perhaps the best time to leave the ME is when your present employer is about to lose the contract, and you have no idea who might take over. The uncertainty factor might just be the push to make you look for a safer haven. Griffith/Imtiaz are coming to the end of their contract, but still no news on what will happen in future.

Any suggestions on where to jump?

We'll wait and see. Those of us who worked for Malachy have seen it all before. Griffith hasn't been too bad as far as contractors go. For the most part they leave you alone as long as you turn up, do your job and don't whine. People do come and go either one their way up and out, or on their way out and down.
