I was wondering if someone could recommend inexpensive lodging in Shenzhen while job-hunting? Thanks in advance.

check out Home Inn or 7 Days Inn... both are national chains. They are relatively cheap but clean and the service professional. I've used them a few times in different cities, and never had any problems. Shenzhen certainly has them, in multiple locations.

Or the 168 and 188 Motel chains...spartan, basic, but quite, quite clean and even cheaper than the two above in most major cities in China.

What about the Shenzhen YHA in the OCT area? I stayed there over the winter holiday and it was fine. I stayed in a private double room for about 150-160RMB/nght, though you can also get a bed in the dorms for about 60/ngt.

Go to Shekou and then walk back towards Shenzhen and stop in all the hotels about 5 minutes up the road until you find a cheap one. 3 years ago I use to pay 108 mb a night for a decent hotel. Shekou is a nice area and you can find cheap hotels outside of the western area.

1. Can you speak Chinese? There are a series of small, ghetto hotels right behind the Shangri-La hotel near Luo Hu station. You should be able to get something there for about 90RMB per night. If you buy a week all at once, you can get it down to as low as 75-80 per night. The hotels are not the cleanest place, but they are functional.

2. What could you be thinking trying to find work in Shenzhen? As many people as are there, there is almost nothing there. At least at this time of year.

3. I hope that you aren't a black person looking for work. If so, you can save your time and money and go to a smaller city (those are the only places that employ black people-- and very grudgingly, at that).

An employer hiring you grudgingly. That sounds like such a pleasant situation. "Well you subhuman black person, we tried to hire the orangutan but he wanted too much money, so you are the best we can do".

I hope you aren't a racist giving advice. If so, you should remember that this kind of mentality is more about racial hatred than anything else. Why not do us all a favor and keep your ignorance to yourself?

1. I am not ignorant. I'm black. And I've plenty of experience with schools that don't hire black people. PLENTY. So, let's be careful about the assignment of ignorance-- since our positions are reversed. 2. I've just gotten finished sorting through some text messages today that say that these schools are only looking for white teachers. 3. I'm just trying to save another black person some money looking for work in Shenzhen. It very likely won't materialize at this time of year in Shenzhen. Or, I should say that it DEFINITELY won't materialize in Shenzhen this time of year and is not likely to materialize even during the high season. 4. If you don't believe me, there is a recruiter in Shenzhen called "Perlandas Harris." He's a black man and he will tell you up front that most schools don't like to hire black people.

Well, the 'guesthouses' behind the Shangri-La along Jianshe Lu are...brothels. Good night to a long night of loud goings-on in the neighbourhood.

There is a youth hostel in Shenzhen, but it's a long way out of town, in a place called Happy Valley in the Overseas Chinese Town.

So let's get this straight. You say you're black (which may or may not be true), yet you hope the OP isn't a black person looking for work in Shenzhen because it's not easy for black teachers to find jobs in such a big city so they should stay away from there and stick to the smaller cities which are the only ones in China that hire black people?
I don't want to put words in your mouth, but isn't that what you wrote? Why would any intelligent person, regardless of the color of their skin, accept such fallacious advice? MLK, Jr. must be rolling over in his grave!
