Is it common in Taiwan for a school to reimburse for airfare and to provide a contract completion bonus?
Also, is age (I'm 49 but with 20 years of assorted teaching experience) likely to be an issue? |

I've been in Taiwan only a year, but from what I've seen airfare reimbursement is not common. I believe, though, that contract completion bonuses are pretty standard. I myself will be getting NT$15,000 next month when my contract expires. Well, actually only NT$12,000 after they take out 20% in taxes (which I'll get back at tax time...in late 2010!)
Regarding age, I'm 46, and I had no problems finding a job. I think presenting yourself as friendly and professional is the key. I'm working for a school where the majority of students are adults. I'm guessing that schools for children look for younger teachers since they have more energy and seem more approachable by the students. Of course, there are always exceptions. For me, I've found that I much prefer teaching adults and, at age 49, you may feel this way too. |

I know of only one school that has offered airfare reimbursement, and that was a one-off promotion (Hess, about two years ago). Completion bonuses are more common, in my experience, but sometimes they are called different things. EG, "student retention bonus" or "perfect attendance bonus" serve a similar purpose.
Age may be an issue initially (to actually getting hired) but age becomes less an issue once you are in there and able to form relationships and get people to know you. One of the best teachers I know is in his late 50's, still working with elementary kids. For you, your big plus is your teaching experience, so make sure you stress it! They aren't going to find a 20-something with 20 years teaching under their belts

Great Post, TJA!
I think you are right on the spot! Even when I was in my mid-twenties (and just starting in Taiwan), I looked for a school that offered a balance of kids classes and adult classes.
Remember: Kids don't care how old their teachers are! They are used to teachers being 22 to 60+ at their elementary schools.
Best wishes to all!
