It seems that we have a lot of books and other stuff that need to be shipped to UAE. The extra 45 kg quote is far from enough. Should I ask the school if they would cover the shippment of all these boxes of books and choice kitchen utensils?

Just send them by air cargo.

You can ask, but I doubt that you will get paid for it since many of the employers give no shipping and those that do give only a nominal sum for the most part. They justify this because most places give a furniture allowance.

Like SJ, I normally sent a couple boxes of books and materials by air freight and it wasn't too horribly expensive, but I wanted the stuff. Kitchen and household stuff is cheap to buy there and thus not worth shipping. I always brought a few of my favorite cooking items in my suitcase - they would fit into a rubbermaid cake pan. I also brought my personal sheets because I am picky. Laughing

Thanks, SJ and VS.

I checked with Fedex today and was told a cubic meter of stuff (weight doesnot matter) costs about 600 US dollars for ocean shippment. I didnot bother asking air freight cost.

Don't even think of using a company like FedEx or UPS for anything larger than an envelope.

You call the airline directly. I would drive it to the airport myself and go to the airline freight office. It just happened that BA was the most convenient. I would discuss it with your employer who may be of assistance too.

If you are coming from the states, the USPS (and this is NOT an endorsement!) has special rates for shipping literature.

Check with a freight forwarding company or airline directly as VS suggested. Courier companies are your most expensive option.

unless you're a michelin star rated chef and travel with your knives, all kitchen materials can be bought cheaper than you paid for them in the usa
and books can be bought in the gulf too
instead of first thinking shipping, you should max out your allowage check in and carry on FIRST
