I've spent the last 9 months on an exchange program in Japan, and as I'll be graduating soon, I would like to come back and teach English. I'm a linguistics major, and I've been thinking about teaching English for a while. However, I somehow got a girlfriend while being here, so it's only natural that I'd like to be placed somewhere close to where she lives. I've heard that it's not a good idea to mention anything like a girlfriend, as it'll be assumed that you're looking for an easy way to spend time with your significant other. However, she lives in a somewhat rural area, so I'm not sure if there are any excuses I could give. I would probably still take the job even if I'm placed somewhere on the opposite of the country, but I was just wondering what I should say. Any ideas? Thanks!

Rural areas are often unwanted by newbies, so employers would be happy to hear you want to be placed there. If you are pressed for a reason, tell them why you like it there. Leave "girlfriend" out of the conversation. If anything, just say you have friends (plural) there.

Invite your students and your girlfriend to the same restaurant. Then switch between them by excusing yourself to "the bathroom."

That plan never fails.

Thank you, Glenski! I'll give it a shot.

Also, your plan intrigues me, Suwon. It sounds foolproof...
