Sounds like you might have Dengue or even Typhoid (I have had that and it felt like the flu, and I waited too long to go to the Doc) Go to the Farmacia Similares and get checked out. It won't take long and you can avoid the IMSS thing. IMSS are doing free flu testing across Mexico this weekend, member or not. Keep us posted or we will worry!

P.S. I forgot to answer your original question. I have had a cold for a week but nothing like you describe. Just chalked it up to change in climate, as the locals say. I'm sure it's just the late flu season but I have been pounding C's and those magic Canadian cold tabs the hockey players take (Cold FX). I think they work. I hope the Vancouver Canucks are taking them.

It has been some time since I have accessed this forum. You were all so incredibly helpful last year at this time when I was actively searching for a TEFL job in Mexico, but . . . then . . . when circumstances caused me to put the plan on hold for the time-being . . . I stopped accessing the forum. UNTIL . . . this week's news about the swine flu. Then my thoughts and concerns immediately went to all of you. I am sure I am not alone. This forum has provided such warm, welcome, informative, and compasionate support for those of us full of fears about whether it is possible for us to ever make ourselves feel at home in a country which is not our own. You let us know that, yes . . . it is most definitely possible! You have all proven to be such a supportive and resilient group. Mexico is lucky to have you there at a time like this. Please do whatever you can to keep the stress level down and your spirits up and know that all of our thoughts are with you. If there is such a thing as karma . . . you will all be fine (but . . . please DO let us know how you are, expecially YOU Dragon Lady . . . as you know . . . we thrive on worry!!!).

Likely this is just a coincidence, but I'm sick as a dog - high fever, sweats, dry cough, sneezing, killer headache.

I hate doctors, fear needles and believe that a crowded clinic is the last place I'd want to spend 2-3 hours on a Sunday.

Dragging lady

If anybody has any symptons like these they have an obligation to themselves and to others (esp. students as a teacher) to get to a doctor/hospital ASAP and get checked out.

This swine flu can be treated, but the anti-virals work best in the first 48 hours from the onset of symptons.

"Among the 16 confirmed swine flu deaths in Mexico, the average time victims waited before going to a doctor was seven days. For those who were sickened but recovered, the average wait was three days."

It's treatable so there seems no reason to wait to seek treatment.

Ok for anyone who cares, here is my update.

Ill never know if what I had was the flu because when I went to the doctor, he admitted that there were no culture kits available in all of Veracruz to grow the bacteria to test it. I did have a battery of blood work and chest xrays which set me back just under 2100 pesos Shocked
His verdict? That whatever I had is gone, and at this time Im healthier than he is. Cool

Next time I think Ill keep the pesos in MY pocket.

Regards,
Dragonlady

I understand. I hate doctors too. I'm headed to Oaxaca in a couple of weeks with some Tamiflu in my pocket but I'm really not worried. Glad you are ok.
