I will be finishing a teaching contract with HCT next year and am thinking about looking for a contract with UAEU for the year after.

Is it possible to do so without taking a 6 month gap?

Any pointers?

Do a search on NOC or no objection letters. I know this was discussed just recently

I remember the discussion as well, but I also have heard of a "Gentleman's agreement between the tertiary insitiutions NOT to agree to taking each other's on as it is considered poaching. I'm thinking that it means that an application to another from one working at another would simply be turned down.

An' ya know they don't hafta give a reason...!

I know of someone who went from UAEU directly to HCT recently. Don't know why it wouldn't work the other way around.

Maybe they relaxed the agreement.

It may depend on your college's director and which side of the bed he got out of on a given morning. Cool

It may also depend on what's happened recently in the HCT system. The VC would dearly love to place a ban on anyone moving on by putting a clause in the contract - fortunately, the law does not allow him to do so. However, if it comes to his attention that there are a number of people moving to UAEU, AUS, ZU etc. He may try again.

I do believe the legal positon that tertiary level teachers with Masters' cannot have a ban placed on them - however, the VC and his henchmen may try to get the "gentlemen's" agreement enforced if his nose gets out of joint.

I did this in 2007, there was no problem whatsoever and I quit in the middle of my contract with HCT, I handed in my notice on time, left the country in summer and came back on a new visa... even got the relocation allowance. the one thing i did not get was the gratuity for the year in which i left, they found some weird explanation for that, but i didnt care that much about it, i just wanted to be out of HCT and it worked well and i am much happier at UAEU, though i am not UGRU, I am faculty and not in english or ESL i should add...

I'm planning to finish my contract with HCT, and I hope to leave in reasonably good odour - though you never know.

When I started here I had 3 or 4 colleagues who had gone the other way, UAEU to HCT, without any problems, and had all received relocation allowances, in spite of living in the country already.

From my own personal experience....if you finish a contract and get a NOC from the director, there's no problem finding employment at the other tertiary institutions in the UAE. At least this was my case.

You should have read my historical spiel about working at UGRU way back in the time period of 1990-5 -- that is, before it was pulled. Very Happy

As I recall, that was one of the bad periods. One of the things that I remember from back then was the complaint that every teacher seemed to be a different pay scale. Laughing And all seemed to be lower than HCT at the time.

Right now URGU is in one of its up periods. Everyone seems pretty happy with the salary bump of last year - which has put them ahead of HCT - and this year they only had to hire 5 new teachers... some of which were ex-teachers choosing to return versus the normals in the past of 20 to way more each year.

In fact, UGRU grossly underestimated the need for new teachers this fall, and some ended up doing forced overtime, this naturally leading to discontent and resentment. Some of the extra classes were later cancelled, but a few teachers ended up stuck with extra classes they didn't want because of management's inablity to plan accordingly. To be continued... I'm sure Laughing

Rumor has it... that 3 or 4 new teachers are coming in January. Hopefully that will ease some of the problem. I hear that HCT in Al-Ain is having the same problem with too much "volunteered" overtime. Sounds like the Ministry cut the budget... but still accepted the students. Gee... how unusual...
