In Hong Kong, one very upmarket shopping mall celebrated womans' day with a make up and fashion advice galla..me thinks this is not what the original organisers had in mind..but apparently it was enjoyed by the participants..who were, according to reports, mostly young mainland women on a trip to Hong Kong. Maybe they felt better holding up half the sky with the right blusher to match their clothes!!!

My first year in China, in Hubei, all the woman teachers were given half a day off, we had a ping pong tournament given a towel, umbrella and 50rmb.
I was pretty chuffed.
Chairman Mao gave great imprtance to women's day. He loved women especially the young nubile ones, by all accounts.
Chinese friend rang up just now to wish me a happy women's day.

In Indonesia they have Kartini Day (April 21st) named after a 19th century writer who championed women's rights in Java, and especially campaigned against poligamy. You can even go to her monument which stands on the place where her placenta was buried when she was born.
We don't get a day off work tho, but the teachers at another school here have to wear traditional sarongs and kebayas to school that day for some reason.

Good for her. Is it traditonal to bury the palcenta and do they plant a tree over it or something. I remember when my dog gave birth she ate the placenta and the stillborn puppy.

I think it was traditional to bury it, but not sure if they still do, maybe in more rural areas. There's still plenty of poligamy and female circumcision however. Grrrrr.

Wait a minute--did I miss my day?!?!? Damn.

My dear sweet ex-boyfriend never gave me flowers (except for one single rose at the very beginning...), for the same reason that has been cited here. Why take a thing of beauty, rip it out of the ground, and kill it? One day, after an argument, he showed up at my door with a lovely potted plant that gave me several years of companionship.

(I confess, though, that I do still enjoy receiving flowers... Murderess!!!)
