Hi,
sorry if im asking any questions which have been answered in the forums, however all questions asked seem to get good quality specific answers, and i have a few specific questions.

Case is, im 24, male, Australian, have a university degree and am TESOL certified, have dual citizenship -Australia and Malta, so have an EU Passport Very Happy

I am leaving Australia for KL on 4 august, originally planned to travel asia/india for 4-5 months to then arrive in Spain in dec to look for work at start of second trimester in jan, thus i would work the next 6 months teaching to wait out the winter till travel eurpoe in summer..
however i am thinking that i may only have around 2000 euro by then and it will not be enough to set up in spain as i will need to look for work, pay for month rent, bond etc and have to wait a month to get paid once I finally do get a job.

So am starting to think maybe changing plans, flying to spain mid august to look for work that starts in september. i will try find a year contract, so to work till june next year??

ok now what i would like to know is:

if wanting to start work in sep how early should i get to spain to find work? is there anything i can do now to help my chances once i get there (email CV's and cover sheet to language schools??))
i would arrive there in mid august, is that enough time to find work for sep? I dont have much experience, just prac for Dip ED. i am doing in aus and tesol pracs. will i be able to get a job with out expereince that still pays alright??

How much will it cost to initiallsy set up in spain?? and what lifestyle will the wages afford me??
I would lilke to probably find somewhere down south, maybe Seville...somewhere not too big not too small, coastal.
I am happy to live in share house, but a nice place.

I know wages arent much in spain, but im aware the living costs would be quite cheap, so would i be paid enough to:
i) live in a nice neighbourhood, in a moderately nice apartment
ii)to be able to eat well, (but i enjoy cooking so not just eating out)
iii)drink beers and smoke ciggarettes
iv)be able to put a hundred (2 hundred !?) euro a way a month for the odd roadie when time permits
v)have a fair bit of fun

Im not going to spain to make money but still would like to be able to make enough to live comfortably, go on the odd road trip, and not eat too much into my savings so that i can travel europe after teaching for one year, surely they pay teaches with such qualifications to atleast get enough for that???
i work as a labourer at moment and get paid about a monthly salary over there, in a week here.
would love any suggestions on how to obtain work once in spain and any other information in regard to moving to spain to work as an english teacher,

cheers

Laughing

Hey, am Aussie with EU teaching in Spain. Been here since Jan.

Cant help you with the timing of the contract. Yeah, send CVs in advance and tell them when youre arriving.

Yeah, youll get the same pay as anyone. Some schools have a preference for more experience but most are willing to take on a newbie.

Im in the centre of Spain but outside of Madrid. Had to pay a bond (400 Euros month but very nice). I chose to live alone and pay more for rent but Im not in a city.

I had to buy some stuff for the house but did it from cheap Chinese bizaar shops. Most rental places come furnished but you may need sheets-blankets etc. If you had a job right away you could set up for 1000 Euros but you dont get paid until the end of first month. I had a long wait and a credit card. I really should have had 2000 Euros.

You soon find cheap tapas bars and drinks. I travel every 2nd weekend and dont eat out more than twice a week (cept for tapas). You just have to troll around for cheap stuff. I cook too. My town is small so no movies etc. and a cheaper cost of living. I dont buy a whole lot of stuff. I had to downscale my lifestyle but it was easier than Id imagined on the wage (get $1100 euros net). Then again, I dont live in a big city where stuff is expensive and where there is a lot of potential to spend on transport, entertainment and social life and I dont have a car. Share accomm is the best solution. Look around. Some places are way nicer than others. Dont take the first thing you see.

Seville is not coastal but not a huge trek either. Andalucia is great. ou will fall in love with it.

Beer and cigs shouldnt be a prob. Beer are 1 euro 20 and so are wines. I am a good saver but couldnt put 200 euro away for the month and still do my travel. Maybe 100 but then bills come. I wouldnt say its impossible however. Depends on your rent.

Fun - yes. Live comfortably -yes, Road Trip - yes. Pool with other teachers and rent a car for the weekend (if youre lucky, one of your teachers has a car). You will be able to find cheap Ryan air flights or long haul buses and have weekend escapes. I have been all over Spain and beyond. Just make sure you dont have to work on Saturdays.

So, unless your smack bang in the middle of an expensive city, youll be OK. This was my first experience teaching outside of Australia and its been great.

Got my job on an online website in December and started inJanuary. Just before you arrive in Spain, email a list of schools in your area of preference and tell them when you will be there.

Good luck. It can be done. Wasnt too hard for me.
