If Cathay pilots make so much, one wonders where the airline is cutting corners in order to maximize profit. Confused

It's publicly traded and both its GOAL and its OBJECTIVE (heh heh) is to return profit to investors. Twisted Evil

1984, emoticons were quite cool when they first appeared, but their use is fairly rare now, though I see you still seem quite fond of them.

First, HK$70,000 a month for a senior pilot based in HK, or for any senior post in the territory, is nothing. The ESF pay scale goes up to HK$75,000 and they get housing allowance to boot. (Principals at local schools are often on the top of the EDB pay scale which again is around HK$80,000.) Which has the more responsibility, teaching a bit of English or flying a Jumbo jet that, if crashed into a building, could kill many thousands?

The airline is cutting costs by reducing salaries and also by putting many staff (both cabin crew and pilots) on unpaid leave.

As regards returning profits to investors, I see you like to try to pass yourself off as some sort of financial whiz kid and/or guru. That being the case, then I'm sure you'll well know that in order to install and sustain consumer and investor confidence the firm would have to recruit high caliber staff, who, of course, would tend to have relatively high salary demands. So, in short, by paying high salaries they are indeed fulfilling their promise to their investors.
