If you are Canadian, or already in Japan looking for a job, and you like to work with children, then I highly recommend going with Peppy Kids Club. I worked for them for 8 months in 2003. I worked about 25 hours a week, including all my preparation time. And I was paid 215,000 yen per month on a working holiday visa. Those on working visas were paid 250,000 per month and they worked exactly the same hours. The best thing about Peppy was that I got to travel all over Japan for FREE on business trips. I went to over 20 prefectures. But if you don't want to go on business trips, you don't have to. Also, I read previous messages saying that Peppy is not really teaching, it's more like day care. Well actually it is really fun. You play games, sing songs, draw pictures, or whatever depending the age level. But you also teach English. The children are great if you know how to relate to kids. Anyways I thought I should mention them because there is not much about them on this site.
Cheers,

Meyay,
I've heard mostly good things about Peppy Kids Club.
If you're into the idea of daycare with English, then it certainly is a great job. I've met a few Canadians who really found it enjoyable. They're mostly kid-oriented, and they got stimulation from adult conversation by teaching eikaiwa part time. I think it's not a bad balance. |

I just came back from Japan (boo-hoo ) and I was a teacher for Peppy there. I must say, the kids were driving me crazy. Yeah, it's true, the hours are short, and you get paid ok for the work you do, but teaching kids is HARD!! Anyway, Peppy's ok, but please make sure you love kids, coz you will be very sad!! I envy all of you still in Japan...I was on the WHV, so I can't go back. Enjoy it while you are there... |

I worked for Peppy Kids for 2 years. I had a good experience as far as preparation for coming to Japan was concerned. They gave me lots of information about Japan and what to bring, visas, etc. I was so excited about coming to Japan and teaching. However, once I arrived in Japan and started working for them my experience was not so great. During my experience at Peppy, the teachers tended to ostracize and socially blackball anyone who showed dedication to the teaching profession. But then again, you can't win 'em all. It's a good place to work if you are looking for a low-prep, somewhat unsatisfying teaching experience. |

I worked for Peppy about 2 years ago on a WHV. I had a blast, but I do agree that you REALLY have to like kids if you're thinking about working for them. The younger classes definately make you feel like a bit of a daycare supervisor (not to say they're all crazy, but you have to walk the fine line of fun and insanity). The older kids are fun to be around, with some classes as an exception.
The training was okay, but this is the kinds place where it's all about what you bring to class. The core material is fine, but it's the games you and the other teachers make and learn that make your classes whiz by. I'd say if you'd rather just open the book and walk through it, adults are more your thing. |

The deductions are pretty small if I remember correctly. It was only a couple thousand yen for the color copies and stuff like that. |

This is my first post, so any feedback would be great!
I too am considering Peppy, and I would love to know more about positive/negative experiences in specific locations. Is each branch basically the same, or does it depend where you're at?
Also, considering that a couple of people have said that the actual working hours are pretty low (compared to an average school), is it reasonable to assume I would be able to work an extra 15 or 20 hours a week elsewhere?
Thanks |

Hello, I said "if you are Canadian" due to the fact that Peppy is only hiring people who are living in Canada, or already living in Japan. It's just where they hire people from.
Yes, you have to like kids! That is pretty much all you ever do is teach children.
All branches will have the same curriculum, and teaching situations. However, if you live in the Nagoya area (where Peppy is based), you will work longer hours, but have less commuting time. |

Approximately, how many people do you think Peppy Kids Club recruit from Canada each hiring session? |

I was wondering for those who worked with Peppy Kid's Club, when did you find out where you were going to be placed in Japan? |
