Who are the hottest celebrities in Japanese culture now?

I have some celebrity pictures in my school recourse file but I dont really think Michel Jackson and Madonna are very relevant any more.

In the eyes of university students, who are the hot celebrities (both Japanese and Western) in entertainment and professional sports?

You would be okay with:

Koda Kumi
Kitajima Kosuke,
Ichiro,
Asashoryu,
Hamasaki Ayumi,
Yamada Yu,
Ueto Aya,
Ai-Chan,
Nakamura Shinsuke,
The guy from SMAP who recently got caught running around drunk and naked in a park in Tokyo,
Watanabe Ken,

Foreigners?

Brad Pitt,
Angelina Jolie,
David Beckham (maybe?)

Actually, that one is a bit tougher as people who seem to be megastars sometimes just don't register as much as you might have thought. I don't even know is Mad Onna is still famous here, especially with uni students who wouldn't have grown up with her.

He doesn't have Gackt in his list!

Tsuchiya Anna is another.

Hot westerners are a bit hard. A lot of the westen celebs that you see all the time here are chosen more for their fame/popularity rather than looks. Like Tommy Lee Jones for example.

Maybe Beyonce... but she might just be considered popular rather than hot.

When I was teaching the most common celebs that came up in class were

Johnny Depp
George Clooney
Brad Bitt

Come to think of it, I don't think I ever had a female celeb come up.

This is a great question and I'm turning it into a lesson. Take a survey, discuss the results, etc...

So yeah, why don't you ask your students?

Er...is this hot as in famous/popular or hot as in reeeeeow!

If it is the latter then probably strike the sumo wrestler from the list I put up. I didn't even know Gackt was still around, thought it was some bizarre hermaphrodite phase Japan went through for a few weeks.

Yeah, I would agree with Beyonce being fairly popular yet I wouldn't be confident about uni students instantly recognizing her. I haven't done the research on that.

Shocked Just a... I can assure that our Gackt-sama is still very much around. I saw him on a show for GW too. He was more than just a phase. Main singer for Malice Mizer, part of the inseperable Mana-Gackt duo that appeared everywhere, solo singer, actor, TV personality (quite a shocking one at times too), model for pretty much all the great male characters in Final Fantasy, putting out music for video games and movies (my fav is still Longing from Final fantasy: Dirge of Cerberus, but the song for the Kamen Rider movie is quite good to).

Gackt has given my JH girls much to talk about with me, and for that alone I give thanks to the king of bishies. Gackt seems to be a great talking point for Japanese women of all ages, come to think of it.

Yeah, I meant hot like the in thing, popular, rich, famous very recognizable by the students as living the celebrity lifestyle.

Btw, Beyonce did come up in class and the students knew her (I think she has a big ad campain now, I saw her on TV and on a poster in a JR train car) , as well as Bill Gates. I used David Beckham last term and some knew him, some not.

Thanks for the replies so far!

I still use Michael Jackson all the time, but the kids see him more as a curio than a relevant celebrity....

This is a strange one, so don't ask me how I know. I'm not too sure how I came to know.

Haha, I love Gackt - he's so damn hilarious in every interview and tv appearance (available for your viewing pleasure on youtube).

Kusanagi Tsuyoshi. I never cared about him till he did that. Now I think he's pretty damn cool Laughing

I will do several things with them including role play. I think it would be fun to have a TV show/comic character included, so please bring it on.
