Dear While I was out

Well, the salary certainly seems too good to be true

12,000 US$ monthly (negotiable).

and I can't find the company (MAZ) on Google.

So, I'd say beware.

Regards,
John

Dear Mr. Slat,

Thank you for your concern, but I had no intention of applying for the position. I'm a married man, not a lady as requested in the advertisement.

Regards,

While...

I googled MAZ Company and came up with a website, but there's nothing on the page. Then, googled MAZCO and came up with a listing for a few jobs that included a teaching position for a male (Indian or Pakistani) as well as positions for domestic help.

Ya know, I'm kinda thinkin' that they meant to say 12,000 AED, not 12,000 USD...

Yup, especially as it says "negotiable" on the ad. Would they seriously think anyone would try to counteroffer $12K p/ month?

Dear anaxiforminges,

Well, $3,267.53 does seem more believable. But I'd have to negotiate it up to $3,268 before I'd take the offer.

John

I suspect that this may not be a scam. And I also suspect that it may very well be $12000 a month - although since they are trying to hire a Brit, why isn't it in Pounds Sterling? And is this only to teach English, or is it all subjects for elementary school in English? Not very clear...

But... oh my... no way would I consider it. Notice that you only get air tickets home every two years?? Two solid years being teacher and I expect, Nanny, to two spoiled locals.

Did you check out the company description from the link? It says "Private company to provide services, products and requirements to VIP clients in United Arab Emirates."

I can't think of any group in the Gulf that I would less want to work directly and privately for...

$12000 is not that surprising if it is private one to one/two. If you work as a consultant or in the oil industry or work as a one-to-one/two teacher with business clients then 6000 sterling per month is not unusual. You pay well for if you want individual, tailor made courses. If the client is a VIP then more pay means more discretion or possible need to move around with the family. - Decently paid nannies are paid in excess of 30,000 sterling for VIP families as they may be on the move and cannot provide their kids a settled education (and prefer not to send them to boarding school). These nannies also get a car, flat and full board thrown in. I know a few of my friends who have landed this plum job.

Wise move, johnslat. Over a 20-year period, the aggregate of 47 cents plus compounded interest would amount to at least an extra $300! Enough to get a ticket out of dodge, or a heck of a night out.
