It's incredible. When it rains, it pours!

I guess Copenhagen is a real destination, whereas The Hague is near Amsterdam. They might also make the decision for me, but just wondering what others think.

Copenhagen. For the reason you mentioned. It's a beautiful city! Lots to offer....den Hague is kind of panelak city, outside the very centre...do you know what I mean?

We were trying to go from Smichov to the centre of Prague and took the tram in the wrong direction to the terminus. We were let off near a bunch of apartment blocks that were identical except for the fruit cut-outs on the sides. I remember the nearest one had cherries, the others were not visible in the nighttime.

yes, rather like the greater Den Haag area...with quite a lot of red-brick attached housing thrown in the mix. Picture lots of graffiti, and some very strongly ethnicly marked areas...

Unless you live somewhere very chic in Den Haag, it is a hole. Ugly, with an unpleasant climate. I might well be the only person here who dislikes Amsterdam too! I was put off by seeing a guy smoke heroin on the tram at 8am. Oh, and I didn't like seeing porno mags at knee level in the newsagents. Call me a prude, but the cultural "delights" of the city didn't compensate for the cost, and the acceptance of large-scale prostitution and drug use.

TIR, I agree with you about Amsterdam. I've found the locals to be often surly and rude, I have been robbed twice in the city (nothing serious, but off-putting all the same) and find it feels essentially dirty and dangerous.

Spiral: as soon as I posted last night I remembered you live in NL and hoped I hadn't offended you! But it's interesting you also find that A'dam feels dangerous. I could never put my finger on it, but there always seemed to be a hint of menace in the air - I've only ever felt the same before in Manila.

I used to live near Zuiderpark in Den Haag - and although it was dirty, cramped housing, with a seemingly permanent mouse infestation problem, it didn't feel particularly "dangerous" - just ugly. Oh, except for the kids that tried to set fire to our front door and the street fights, but I didn't take that personally.

Yeah, I'm currently living in a well-located house which also (unfortunately) houses two university students. They're disturbing to a pretty high degree, but I can't take that personally either - they're 20, after all! But I'm moving house over the summer Shocked

War zone - well, I lived near Richmond, Virginia some years back, in the period where random road rage killings were fashionable. Couldn't take that personally, either, except as a coment on one's driving skills or lack thereof. Smile
