Ok , summer weather is here in Wroclaw and there is no better place to smell the combo of BO, cig smoke, piss and vodka in the trams. My wife says its the heat that sometimes makes me angery but I know its the "slap in the face" smell of some poles.
There is even a smell to old people that look clean, old polester clothing heating up for the 22nd year. I hold my breath even when jogging by them in the park.
Ok people, its out in the open. Any other experiences. |

Well,it's not only the Poles that smell during summer.I guess I notice it more here because I use public transport daily, whereas in Canuckistan,I drove everywhere.
Some of my students reek a bit during the hot days and I think I know why.
Many of them leave their home at 6:30-7amish and spend the day in a stuffy office/classroom/warehouse and then head on over to English class directly after work/school for a few more hours. When you add it up,they're probbaly spending 12 hours out and about sweating it up in the hot and humid conditions.
Cripes, yesterday I showered at 1pm in preparation for my classes which started at 4pm.I was smelling myself at 4:30.The 40 minute bus ride in a crowded, scorching bus did me in completely.I was soaked when I walked through the school's doors.
I told my wife last night that I'm going to start carrying around a can of body spray in my murse from now on.I'll spray myself down liberally before classes start and that should prevent my students from smelling me! I notice that many teachers have cannisters of body spray or bottles of cologne/perfume in their respective bags. |

Get a car dude, sure I sit in traffic sometimes and its balls expensive, but buzzing through pl grundwaldzki to the rynek with the AC blowing cold and listening to tunes while passing 500 students hanging out of one tram sure makes it worth it. My 2 cents. |

I simply can't afford a car and like most of you hate the trams. they're disgusting. unfortunately I just don't have the cash to run a car, let alone buy one. |

After factoring in what I'm going to spend this summer in America on clothing and various other things I need to buy because I can't get it here, airfare, the traveler's insurance, fuel while driving around there, and not earning any money for a month, it amounts to no less than 14,000 zl. for a 1 month trip to America, or about $4000 USD. the airfare alone for 2 is $2000.
considering i need 4 months to net that much money, it means I'm actually living on 8 months pay per year.
I fly home once a year. it's either that or never visit America to have more money here, but i would simply lose my mind going several consecutive years without some time home to recharge the batteries.
as an American, I don't have the luxury of hopping on a cheap flight with Wizzair or Ryanair and being home in 2 hours. i gotta save all year and take a lot of time off to go home.
that's why i can't afford a car. |

Exactly! What many ppl don't realize is that a return ticket to the U.S or Canada is setting you back 3,500-4,000 zl at least, during peak season.
That's only for your bloody plane ticket.I think Australia would be about 5,000zl.The Brits can pop over for a weekend for 400zl.We don't have that luxury. My 3 week trip to Canada last year set me back about 5,000-6,000ZL in total,or 8 weeks of work in Poland. It simply isn't worth it.
Let's not even get into the 20-24 hours of travel involved. |

Why don't you take a Wizz flight to the UK, then get one of the cheapo flights available there to the US? For example, Wizz to London: 126 GBP return, then NW Airlines to NYC for 268 GBP = 394 GBP return including taxes. Means a little extra hassle with the stopover/transfer in the UK but it'd save you a month's earnings. |

I did something similar to this to fly home to the States.
It does save a bundle to fly through London when you fly to the US from Poland. |

there's a fundamental problem with taking Wizz through London. you pay through the nose for your baggage. if you're going to go home for a month, you're not going to take just a carry-on baggage. i need a carry-on and two other bags. when I go to the states i always buy clothes and other things for obvious reasons and i need bags to take them home with.
400GBP is $600. i just checked what the baggage prices are and for a bag 10-20KG, you pay an additional 64GBP, or $100. 2 bags = $200, so you're already up to $800. add up the additional "baggage fee" and you've got another $30 for a total of $830. also, this is only to England. I don't know if i would then pay baggage fees again for the flight to America or if i would have to pay Wizz Air again for the flight back to Poland.
Ticket prices to America in the past for me were always somewhere around $1000. I paid for my tickets this year $865 each. Lufthansa, 1 layover in Germany. if i took your advice going through England flying a discount airline I'm looking at $830. clearly not worth it. |

I am curious to know what kind of clothes you're buying over there? I personally have embraced Polish short shorts and an overall bland best-not-to-stick-out fashion ethos during my time here. I burned my tight jeans on arrival. |

You can often find deals to some of the major cities in the U.S or the biggest centres in Canada from Europe, but when you are from some town out in the sticks like me,your domestic flight ends up equalling your international flight in terms of cost.
You can't do it for under 3,200zl.That's in my situation anyway.Flying through London always makes it even more expensive.
That's how it works when Scair Canada runs the show and has a monopoly. |

I have also found that flying from hub to hub is much cheaper than anything else (Wizzair- Warsaw to Hahn then a 1 hour bus ride to the Frankfurt airport). For example, I fly from Frankfurt to Denver and then take a southwest flight from there to Vegas!! |

I'm happy to have paid the 6426zl for my car insurance & fuel costs to keep off the stinky trams/buses.
I was in Warsaw for the last week, and took buses and trams, it just reminded me how much i love my car.
I'd never live in Warsaw. On Thursday, starting at 16, it took me and friends almost 3 hours to get from PKP Kasprzaka thru the city to Zegrze.
Insane. |
