Is it just me or has anyone else noticed an influx of newbies, both coming to Mexico and wannabes?

I don't mean that on this forum but in several other places I have seen a big jump in the number of people that either want to teach English in Mexico or just find a job in Mexico. Kinda funny, Mexico isn't know for it's great pay rates in any field, let alone TEFL.

I guess there are a lot of desperadoes in the US, and other countries that are willing to take a job overseas, or at least think about it.

Also, for every person that actually researches teaching in Mexico (or another country) and thinks about it, how many actually do it? What about people that take those seminar and online TEFL "certs"? How many of them actually use those certs and go teach somewhere?

I think a lot of people have jumped on the tefl bandwagon due to the crisis in the US and Europe, the lack of jobs and just wanting to get away for a while.

I used to work in coordination in a school that hired people with online certs. I remember one guy we hired, who had never set foot in a classroom, turned out to be an excellent teacher so I guess it can work out.

I guess I would be placed in the "newbe" catagory. I just arrived in DF on Saturday. I will be looking for a job here soon. I am interested in meeting some of the teachers here in the area. I will be living in Mexico with my couple who is a Mexican national..hence why I have moved here.

If any one is interested it would be appreciated. I have lots of questions and am starting my new life here.

Thanks....

Hello Prof,
I agree; there does seem to be an influx of new teachers and an interest in Mexico.

I was a long time lurker before I joined the forums.

My reasons for going to Mexico are varied:
I grew up in San Antonio and have embraced Mexican culture since I was a lad.
I have traveled throughout Mexico several times and loved it.
I studied the History of Mexico and Latin American History in Graduate School.
The last conference paper I presented in Las Vegas,NV. in March 2008 for the Southwest Historical Society was over Jose Vasconcelos. He was part of the 1910 Revolution and a national reformer of education and the arts.

Also, I am on the prowl for a cool female foreign teacher to enjoy the world with me and I figure Mexico is a good place to start looking.

Friendly Kiwis and Aussies may apply here. Very Happy

I've been reading the posts here for over a year and I'm just now starting to write some. I've been living in DF almost a year now. I usually teach in companies because they pay more than the schools.
Since things are so bad in the States now I figure I'll stay here for a while. I get to learn about another culture and try to learn Spanish.

Very Happy

Thanks for posting! You made some good points. things aren't looking up in the US. Better to stay where you know things are always down and out Laughing

Being a teacher is an OK job. And Mexico is an OK place to live. Different food, culture, etc.
