I'm thinking of taking a trip back to the old US here soon and of course I want to take my cats. What would I need to get them out of Mexico and back into the US? One of them has papers from America from when I initially brought him in, but the other is a cat I adopted in Mexico. I figure I'd need to get them both vaccinated again for rabies within 30 days of leaving the country (at least, this is the standard in other places) and then get a health certificate within 72 hours, but is there anything else I should know?

When I left Mexico with my cat, I just needed a health certificate and proof of rabies vaccination. I flew back north so I used a special pet carrying bag to keep him under the seat. Make sure not to give your cats much water before you start your journey on the plane (don't ask).

I had virtually no questions about the cat going through either US or Canada Customs and Immigration. They didn't even look at the papers; they did ask, but as soon as I started to pull out the paperwork they waved me through without even glancing at it.

Do be aware that if you end up travelling during hot weather and the cats have to fly cargo, then they will not be able to fly due to temperature restrictions.

As has been stated, rabies shots and a health certificate should be all you need (although I am not sure if 72 hours is too much...)

did you arrange with the airline before actual travel time, such as when you bought your ticket? How is this done if tickets are bought on line? Was there an additional fee?
I flew Continental, from HUX to Houston, then direct from Houston to Vancouver. I phoned the airline first, as only certain flights allow animals in the cabin. They assured me that everything was good for the cat as long as he was in his own bag that fit certain dimensions (you can find those on their web site).

I did have to pay extra to carry on the cat when I bought the tickets online, but it was pretty minimal - $75 US if I recall correctly.

If you are taking 2 cats most US airlines will not allow you to take them on board. American still lets you have one small pet on board but you must leave them in the carrier.

If they under the plane there is an added expense and ask about the temperature..they will let you know which months are better to fly your babies.

Paperwork from US and Mexico on the cats are the same you just need thier shots up to date and the 10 day paperwork from the Vet stating that the cats are well.

Good luck with it all.

Do not believe any thing Mexicana tells you about taking animals in the plane. I was told twice Ruffle could go in the plane with me. 3 days before leaving I phoned again (don't trust these guys) and I was right not to. They then told me Ruffle could only fly for 3 hrs in the plane HELLO we were traveling from Toronto Canada to Queretaro Mexico with a change in Mexico DF so that was that. Had to threaten them to get my money back after all 2 of their people lied to me. So it was Continental all the way cost was awful but she is my baby. We got here to Queretaro and no one even looked at her. See my other reply to traveling with animals.

See also this thread: http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=58320. Although it focuses on dogs and Canada, much of the info and some of the links also apply to cats.
