I recently taught at Huangpu Experimental School, and me and a few other foreign teachers are warning against taking employment at this organization. They cut wages unfairly, for no substantial reason-offer sub-standard living conditions. I understand cultural differences, and have lived very much with local customs, but the rooms had rats and bugs that bit all night. Even after a diagnosis from hospital saying the insects were causing illness and I should be removed from accomodation immediately they refused. The next day, out of desperation I found my own place and as I was leaving the guards physically restrained me and locked down all the gates so I could not leave. It took a few hours of convincing and the leaders finally let me go to my own place. They also falsely claim to be part of the international IB program, and the IBO has stated to us that they are not allowed to do this and are NOT part of this organization-and you will not become a accredited IB instructor if you work there for two years like stated. On top of it all they run illegally and could not even hire teachers to begin with. I have been in China for almost two years, from cities with only a few other foreigners to villages in the middle of lovely orchards, with little convenience and understand the differences and challenges a new landscape can bring-but this school is beyond normal sphere of treatment and proper conduct.
