The first week of school has come and gone. Perhaps those of us that are loving it here are in the honeymoon period. I have to say this. So far, living in Thailand has been great, and I really enjoy my kids. Yes, the classes are large (I work in a government school), and I am sure the kids can be out of control. I had a great time meeting all of my students last week and am excited to continue the semester with them.

I can say that, so far, I am glad I made the decision to come out here this semester. I have to say, I find that I have a great deal of peace of mind in Thailand. My first week teaching in Thailand was better than any other first week I have had teaching in other countries. And, of course, those of us that are here know that the pace of life and attitude is nice (at least for those of us who are laid back and can roll with the punches).

Glad to hear you are enjoying yourself.

My first week in Bangkok (almost 18 months ago now) was very different:

-out of control kids running all over the classroom and completely ignoring me.

-shellshock at walking down the sidewalks and bumping into people and motorbikes, stepping over potholes and sleeping dogs and ducking under umbrellas on my 5 minute walk into work.

-waking up at 7.20 every morning to a slow drumbeat and the sounds of students chanting as they marched

-baffled at how to use the hectic taxi, bus, songthaew, motorbike taxi-based transportation system

-amazed at how posh, massive and decadent the malls are in such a poor country

-delighted at how tasty and cheap the food is and how you can grab a bite anywhere

You must not be living in Bangkok, reagan. Where are you living?

It most definitely sounds like the previous poster lives in BKK. I would like to make a move there, maybe. I am a city guy, but I do recognize one has to make a pretty good salary. I am about 2.5 hours away. I can get there for a little weekend getaway if need be. I am in Korat province. The pace is slower, but the town has its share of dogs. I don't mind. They are very friendly. It is really cheap as I don't have to pay rent. I can get away on less than 100 THB a day ( school gives me lunch). I suppose that I have lived abroad before and this is cake. Maybe the best place I have lived, so far. You just have to roll with Thailand and it is kind. Don't let the kids get to you, and don't let their behavior get to you and keep you up nights. You just gotta laugh, I guess. Just think about it, you are out numbered 50 to 1! However, I find I am able to get a hold of my students for the most part. You have to keep them busy, activity after activity, after activity. It is very tiring, but I am certain they will begin speaking and even the poor students may learn 3 new words in the course of a semester.

As long as your boss and coworkers aren't pricks you should be fine. Just don't work a ICanRead School.

Oh and they won't help you getting your work permit/work visa.
