I have a very good friend who is currently teaching at Dasman, but is jumping ship at the end of this year. The main reason is the work load/contact hours, but there are other issues. Housing is about as far from the school as you can get. Mahboula to Sharq. Students are apparently no joy to teach, either. She's told me of several issues involving student brawls, and conflicts between teachers and students. All this is coming second hand, so take it with a grain of salt. The housing situation, however, if a fact. |

Well I was hoping that the students would be more respectful of teacher since it is a private school. Furthermore I was thinking that behaviour would not be an issue for the same reason. |

It's been my experience that the private school students are the worst, especially those in middle and high school. I've had the opportunity to work with high school students from the public schools throughout Kuwait for the past 4 years in an after-school program and I've been treated with nothing but respect. Never had a problem. Can't say that about the kids I deal with during the day. |

I was wondering if anyone had any feedback on working at this school, as I have accepted a position there that commences in Aug. |
So..........did you take the job?
I left there June 2008 to move to NES. If you're there, you're probably on a two-year (stitched up and manacled) contract. Very low pay. Awful management (except one). Disgustingly arrogant, aggressive and contemptuous students.
Now they have a new slimy, obsequious snake as "leader".
For me - Dasman was a "foot in the door". They wouldn't reward competent and skillful teachers. So they lose them every year. The librarian was paid more than me. In the UK a librarian is support staff on a support staff payscale. |

I have also been offered a position at Dasman and am looking for some further information.
How are the accommodations for single teachers?
Also how is the work load for teacher? Is the salary they pay enough to get by?
Any other information from teachers working there or from those who have worked there would help me out a lot in making my decision.
Thanks |

Dear ColdCanuk,
Thanks for the information and quick reply,
I believe that if I accept the offer will be staying in Salmiya as it was mentioned to me that I would be staying in the newer smaller apartments. Do these apartments have heat for the winter months? or is it even necessary to have heat during these months?
I was wondering if a lot of the staff at the school is from overseas (UK, Canada, USA). Also how are the students in terms of classroom management and behaviors?
Also how is it living in Kuwait culturally? Is it safe? I know there are restrictions on pork and alcohol but any other sort issues I should know about before I come over?
Thanks,
sbansal |

The Salmiya apartments are really substandard compared to the older buildings they used to house teachers in. Think small. |
