Is there a problem getting through customs with an english version of the Quoran (I figured i'd check it out while in KSA)? While on the subject, if I show up with my ipod stuffed with music and movies are they going to let me keep it?

Dear Airhorn,
About the iPod I can't answer; I left before iPods were BIG (back in '03.) I suspect, however, that, depending upon the Customs Agent you encounter, it won't be a problem (unless those movies and music you were writing about were porno.)
Regarding the Quran (or, for that matter, any other printed material), my advice would be, don't sweat it. In nineteen years, I never had any problem bringing printed materials (books, that is, not magazines) into the Kingdom.
Certainly the Quran would not be a problem.
Regards,
John

As I mentioned earlier, and apparently people think I'm making this up, my Malaysian-Chinese wife put "Buddhist" on the visa application to KSA and joined me in Jeddah in 1993 without a problem.

And what has been happening since?

I assumed you would put on the application the religion most commonly associated with your ethnic group. That is, to play to stereotype so as not to draw attention to yourself.
