Hey, all!
My husband and I are applying for teaching gigs in Indonesia. We had a phone interview for positions at a Jakarta school on Thursday evening our time/Friday morning their time.
We thought that the interview went fairly well and we were pretty confident in our performance, however it's Wednesday afternoon here/Thursday morning there and we still haven't heard anything from the school.
We were told that they were going to staff our applications and decide if we would be offered the jobs. They said that we'd hear from them in one to five days and that they'd email us the proposed contracts if they were going to hire us.
Everything seemed to be going well, but it's been almost a week and we've heard nothing. I know that we can email the school to check on the status, but we don't want to hassle them unnecessarily. (No one wants to appear desperate, right?!)
Since this is our first teach-abroad experience, we're just not sure what to expect. Should we be worried? Looking at alternate schools? Or should we just relax and give it a few more days?
Thanks!

You should send a friendly email. Indonesians are not noted for urgency but neither do they mind a polite reminder. |

...Good point! I just didn't want to bother them if it was normal for it to take a little while. I was hoping to hear from other teachers about how long it took them to get a job offer after their phone interview. |

We heard back from the school last night! It sounds like they like us and are going to offer us a contract, but don't yet know what the start date will be.
We're really hoping for July/August 'cause we've already given notice at our apartment complex and our jobs! We're moving out of our place at the end of June and will be staying with relatives until we move to Indonesia.
From the email we got last night, it sounds like they might be having trouble finding space for us right away and that they might not be offering us gigs until October/November.
Ack! ...I don't want to live with my mother-in-law until October!!!
Cross your fingers for us! |

I know, I know... People have lots and lots of crap to talk about them, but we're cool with low pay and working six days a week. We know that Jakarta isn't a tropical paradise and we know we're going to be sharing a house with a ton of people. We're okay with all of that because it's just a stepping stone-- we don't have any teaching experience and neither of us has our degrees. We've got to pay our dues before we can expect a 'better' job! |
