Bonjour!
A bit of an intro -- my name is Luc, and I'm a Canadian born of French parents (I've got both passports). Because of the seasonal nature of my regular job, I've got winters off, so I thought I'd take advantage of this time to take a TESOL course (100 hours, plus 10 hours practicum), and next winter I'd like to go and live and teach in Paris for a few months (January to April).
I read that January is a good time to look for teaching jobs...but if I have to leave in April, will that count against me? I have no idea how long contracts are for.
Would it be possible instead to find enough work giving private lessons to university students or business people? What's the market like for that sort of instruction? I'm not looking to make lots of money, I'd just be interested in making enough to cover my living expenses while in Paris.
I was thinking I could rent a furnished apartment on a monthly basis once I got there; however, a friend suggested I just stay at a hostel for the first little while because, not knowing anybody in Paris, I'd at least meet people that way (and also, there's no guarantee that I'll find work). What did you guys do for living arrangements?
Thanks in advance for any answers or helpful hints you may have.

Monthly rent not an option unless boarding home or small hotel.
Better have strong connexion BEFORE moving to Paris. |
