| That wage is too low for anywhere close to Shanghai. Just turn down these 10 month contracts for low pay. Hotel ? That would suck. Too bad universities in China still want the bottom of the barrel teachers for bottom of the barrel wages. Decent teachers just go other places. |

It's the hotel-type accomodation that worries me about this deal OP.
You can't be outside your home socialising and sitting around in your bedroom with friends isn't the best.
Make your mind up based on the allowance for an outside pad and what that would get you in Shanghai. I don't know about rent levels in Shanghai.
I turned down a gig at Dalian U of Tech because of accom. One FT who did join DUT hung out at KFC nearby all winter because he was going stir crazy in his room. |
Yes that's exactly what gets me too, so I'm in the process of figuring out whether 3000 per month is enough for an OK place in Shanghai (something tells me no).
And she still hasn't responded to my "ultimatum" of sorts: let me speak to a current FT or no go, I'll give her one more day.
Not to mention I have to send in a physical check which will run me about $60. |

| 3000 is enough to get a place in Shanghai- I paid 3800 and got a really sweet 2 bedroom place with really nice furniture. When i was looking, I was shown other places in the 2800-3300 range and they weren't bad- a few were really nice but not conveniently located for my job. My boyfriend says that several of his colleagues have found nice 1-bedroom furnished places for around 3000 in the downtown area (I was in the leafy suburbs around century park-- very pretty and 2 minutes from the metro). |

But don't just tell him that 3000 is enough for renting, also mention bond/deposit money and how many months up front he might have to pay...
(I've never rented here so I don't really know how this works here.) |

| True, fair 'nuff, but I guess I was thinking they'd come with some start up funds. For me, I managed to wrangle a one month deposit plus first month's rent plus agent's fee (30% of one month). It was a sizeable chunk but I was expecting a lot worse and so was prepared to front it. After that was paid out, my monthly rent and utilities were quite reasonable. When I left that flat, I got my deposit back without a hitch. Negotiate! |

Thanks for the numbers, I'm going to negotiate between 3000 to 4000 for accommodation allowance in my contracts. |
