Good Day All:

Question: What restrictions (if any) are placed on housing that's provided by your employer? Specifically, can you have vistors stay with you and for how long? The reason I ask is because my sister wants to come with us (myself, husband, and two kids) to help us settle in as we are still trying to firm up the schooling/daycare situation.

I've lost track of who your new employer is, but I can't see any problem at all. I don't think any of my employers would have ever known if I had guests... except when I was living in campus housing in Oman. As long as she is of a nationality that can get a tourist visa, there should be no problems with her staying the term of that visa. If she is flying over with you, I would tell the employer.

Nobody worries about who your guests are or how long they stay unless you're a single woman and it's not your husband who's staying of course!

Just make sure you know how long you are going to be put up in a hotel - you might move straight in to your accommodation, but many employers give you a few days in a hotel. And of course your sister's bills would not be covered and could mount up pretty fast. For example UAEU puts people in the Intercon or the Hilton for I think 4 or 5 nights.

Good point... She may want to wait to fly in until you are in a flat.

Maybe your sister shouldn't even buy her ticket to the UAE until you have a definite date for moving into your accommodation. I know teachers who have spent months in a hotel.

On second thoughts, definite dates aren't always so definite here so best get a ticket once you've moved into your nest.

Hopefully the rumors of an easing housing market will mean that the wait won't be as long as it has been.

It's not just the housing market that can mean lengthy stays in hotels. Redecoration or other improvements to places, spats with landlords and other obstacles unforeseen by the housing officers can delay getting keys to your nest.

Having said all that, a quick mail to your housing officer should set your mind at ease. Nearly everyone I know / have known, spent the customary few day / week in a hotel before moving into their new place of abode and I'm sure that'll happen to you huriyyahsmum. One thing that is certain is you will be put up in a hotel after you arrive, which is what your sister needs to think about.
