In terms of gaining an entry-level job, how much difference will having one of the two certifications make in terms of quality (salary, working conditions)? Would it be worth the money?

It's certainly not essential for entry level job in Japan with the bigger eikawa. For example, AEON do not require applicants to have certification, and having a certificate does NOT mean that you get a higher wage- you start on the same as those without certification.

It makes a difference to the smaller schools - I found that it really made a difference to my employability.

Yes. While a full-time contract may not offer better money, part-time and freelance work does (or at least did when I was there). Having a CELTA/Cert. TESOL makes that easier to do.
