|
|
From the May edition of the EL Gazette (http://elgazette.com)...
THUMBS DOWN to those Spanish residential summer schools who seem to be driving a coach and horses through the European Working Time Directive. A schedule of twenty hours teaching plus excursions, evening activities, bedtime duties and the requirement to sleep on the premises for 1,0001,200 a month net of tax sound depressingly familiar to those who keep an eye on the bottom end of the UK market.
But the Spanish school advertising a position for a six-day week with three hours off duty a day seems to be asking for a record 126 working hours a week sleeping on the premises in Spain is definitely considered as working time. They are also definitely breaking the law.
In the UK employers are legally permitted to ask employees, voluntarily, to waive their rights to work no more than 48 hours a week. In Spain it is illegal to get anyone to work more than 48 hours per week, even if they want to.
Meanwhile, you can find out more about the horrors of doing UK summer schools below...
