Dear tillymd,
I'm sorry to have to inform you that wearing Nike tennis shoes - even used ones you got at Goodwill or the Salvation Army - automatically disqualifies you for membership in the 500 Club (unless, of course, you either found them in the garbage or shoplifted them.)

The shoes would be knock-offs from Bangkok of course. In my experience, ALL ESL teachers are members of the fabulous 500er club. Many struggle with denial, but we know the truth.

The initiation ritual is cloaked in secrecy, but I can tell you this: it involves all sorts of debasing and humiliating rites performed before the Sacred Image: The Almighty Dollar.
But I'm afraid you would never pass, based on your own admission:
