| Anything under 13k including housing and transport allowance would not be enough to leave the UK or US for, in my opinion |

13k is a minimum, but that is only "the" offer, it is not really the "offer".
Am I right Brits, Dutchmen, and ladies of all places?
"The" offer and the "offer" are quite unlike, though like they may seem, if we eliminate the the quotation marks.
Actually Roy101, youre right, IF and only IF the 13k STAYS 13k after it whips and winds pell-mell, willy-nilly, and helter-skelter through the Royal Ministry of Attestation Paper-Pulp Mill.
Otherwise, it could dwindle and diminish in a Nose Dive to about the 8,900 someone else quoted you here.
As for Tora Bora, well, I thought Rawalpindi was where The Screamer In The Night actually served. |

Presumably outside the Time Machine since most of what you say is no longer true. |
Actually, most of what he said is still true.

I understand that it's rancid Chef-Boy-Ar-Dee pizza mix but we won't give you your money back...go find something else for the same amount of money, the public pay-phones won't work because it's prayer time, Ma'am you'll have to go outside of the Tamami market into the 50C heat in your abaya for 20 minutes because it's prayer time... |
1) Country is still conservative and not free, and doesn't subscribe to "live and let live".
2) Pork is still forbidden.
3) Alcohol is still forbidden.
4) Women still have far fewer rights than men.
5) Now you can go from city to city without permission from your sponsor, so that's the first point that's not true anymore.
6) I didn't know they would vaccinate you on the spot if you didn't have the vaccination certificate, so that point is moot for me.
7) Grocery stores still don't give refunds, just store credit to be used on the spot. Non-grocery stores do give refunds, but usually something silly like within 3-5 days, unless they are franchises of international chains.
I remember calling a friend on a public pay-phone when I was 12 during prayer time, and it worked just fine, so you are wrong there, NCTBA. However, I was given a scare by a big hand landing on my shoulder, and I turned around to see a "holy man" accompanied by a cop, and I was 'advised' to go pray.
9) And yes, it is still true that all shops not inside compounds close for every prayer, however, in big department stores, and big grocery stores, they lock you in, so you can stay inside. In the small and medium-sized stores, you do have to hurry up and leave if it is prayer time.
10) Yes, it still does reach 50C under the sun.
11) Yes, women still do have to wear abayas in public.
NOTE: I am NOT making any value judgements or insinuating how things should or shouldn't be. Just listing facts. So all you lovers of the KoH, please do not go on about "If you don't like it, then leave", etc. |

5a.) Yes, and we could do that in 2002-4 when I lived in Jeddah. My point was that that was how restricted it was when I lived there from 1994-2000 and it could easliy go back as the checkpoints have never been dismantled.
6) I didn't know they would vaccinate you on the spot if you didn't have the vaccination certificate, so that point is moot for me.
6a.) In 1995, when living in Taif, there was a meningitis outbreak amongst Hajis, all at the al-Gaim were warned that if we tried going to Jeddah and did not carry our vaccination certificates, that the police at the checkpoints (al-Hada, for example) were authorized to administer them before being allowed to pass through.
7) Grocery stores still don't give refunds, just store credit to be used on the spot. Non-grocery stores do give refunds, but usually something silly like within 3-5 days, unless they are franchises of international chains.

8a.) When talking to my Mom from a public phone at the al-Akaria Mall in 1994 (just around the corner from where Johnslat used to live, by the way), the phone went dead just as the call for prayer went off. I was quite disappointed as I am NOT a Muslim and didn't feel that they had a "right" to cut off MY communication with a loved one because I "should be praying" instead. I felt the same way about my wife having to cover as her hair has never particularily driven me to distaraction...altho, it is nice.

Unless Tamami market has changed its' ways, then the big supermarkets certainly throw you out on yer ear. I can't remember if Safestway in Jeddah did it, but then again, Jeddah is a VERY forward-leaning municipality.

I don't think that I am being judgemental as well and I don't take your post as such. Is a reporter being judgemental when s/he is reporting the facts? Sure, large leaps in freedom have been made in that you no longer have to produce a permission letter when going 50 km. from your place of employment. I won't back off my claim about the payphones being cut off during prayer time in RIYADH, which is known to be MUCH, MUCH more a haven for the God Squad than Jeddah...especially North Jeddah, until someone can honestly report that that doesn't happen in that particular mall anymore. The oppression of women will never cease unless you're Queen Noor or a denizen of Turkey, for example.
And, yes, "Saudi Arabia, love it or leave it" advice same-same "America, love it or leave it!"

Like I always say: "Cryptic gibberish can never suitably portray the real oddities of everyday life."
Actually, I never said it once. |
