It never occurred to me so much but in this forum I come to realise that, while most contracts begin in April, some come in August (or maybe other times of the year.)
Anyone know the history why August (or other times of year), after all, the term begins in April.
Thanks |

Around August/Sept is when the 2nd semester begins in Japan. Usually those who have an August start day as an ALT are taking over those who started in April (1st semester, beginning of the year) who are unable to continue for some reason, or filling in an open position that wasn't filled from the start. Hope that helps! |

Stuff happens, teachers quit/go home/etc. For ALT work, the next school term starts in September. So it's a good time to get a replacement in. The vast majority of JET Program contracts start in August too, for reasons beyond me - and I was a JET way back when too! |

Thanks for the replies.
Is the ALT teacher position a MANDATORY requirement by the Board of Education ? Of the ALT is simply that, just an assistant (and thus disposable any time the school wants). |

For the vast majority of positions, disposable. Otherwise they'd be made actual regular employees of the Board of Education, with the potential for tenure once the required number of years worked has been met. |

ALTs are not mandatory. The BOE or school itself determines whether they need them. I've had (and continue to have) plenty of students here in college that have never seen a foreign ALT in HS. |
