I've just been offered a job in Prague, but 16,000 sounds incredibly low to me. I have nothing else offered besides this - no perks- accommodation etc. Could you please let me know what you think? It looks like a min. decent sum is 20, 000.... |

If it's net, it is a bare minimum. Gross, impossible. Get the details. Then we can tell you if it's workable or not. |

Congratulations on getting a job offer. The pay sounds fairly low, however. What is the work schedule like? How many hours a week would you be teaching? If it is a light schedule, then perhaps you could piece together extra work elsewhere to make ends meet. |

20-26 hrs/ week and yes extra hours are available, if you want them. It did sound like gross, though. I'll get back to you. Thank you both! |

i was offered 11,000 net plus shared flat plus health insurance.
so the 11,000 is for food and fun which seems really low.
any comments from prague veterans on whether i can survive on that
i will of course be looking for privates, but one prague veteran i spoke to said half his private have gone away due to the economic situation.
cheers. |

I was a bit flippant when responding to your other post, but I honestly think 11,000 is very tight and you would need to supplement this.
While you will be able to pick up some private teaching if you hustle for it, the downsides are obvious - 1) it takes some time to build a local reputation and contacts, to build a decent base of privates 2) they can cancel at will - and will do! and 3) the economy is impacting all business negatively, and this sector is no exception - there's simply less business out there all round.
If this is the best offer you can find in Prague, what about considering smaller cities in the CR? You may find that the job market is a bit stronger outside the capitol. |

Hello Briana74.
If the job is full-time then it is below average pay.
The average is somewhere between 20-25,000 CZK per month before taxes (if you are paying taxes).
Many teachers choose to teach less hours and earn less and many teachers choose to teach more hours and earn more.
When I was teaching I earnt in excess of 35,000 CZK per month but this was because I taught over 40 hours per week and also was in my second year of teaching.
Always try to search for work in Prague when here - you will most often find a better offer when actually here and when you are better aware of what the general local salary is.

For affordable transport options in the Czech Republic:

This time of year (June), schools will tend to offer you less hours simply because it is the end of the school year.
If you want to have a full-time teaching schedule then you should look at teaching for 2 or 3 schools at the same time.
From September though it gets crazy again.
Yes, the financial crisis of course has had an impact on the language sector too but it has improved in recent months and as an example, ITTP will be opening up new language classes from September 09 so the market definitely isn't saturated.
Hezky den!/Lovely day!
Neville

Yes, it certainly doesn't hurt to look outside of Prague. I'm not sure of the job market out here in Moravia, but I do know that there are opportunities.
Personally, I'd find it very hard to live in Prague, but that is just me. I prefer small cities/towns. |
